Monitoring my Kingston SSD

Post by flavius » 2017/09/03 16:17:33

I just noticed that gnomes disks program is reporting a temperature of 212 F for my Kingston SSD drive but says overall status is ok.
smartctl -i /dev/sda says the device is not in the database. This is CentOS 7.3.

So, my theory is the device can't be monitored properly - since the overall-health self-assessment of the the drive says PASSED. The output of smartctl -a seems to support this (see '231' line below).

How can I get more complete results with linux - do I really have to install windows and run the Kingston software?
I have checked the system bios, didn't see any drive temperatures in there. Since I'm using a server board from intel I have a BMC web control which has 23 temp sensors but most of them I can not identify, see further below.

Code: Select all

smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [x86_64-linux-3.10.0-514.26.2.el7.x86_64] (local build)

Re: Monitoring my Kingston SSD

231 Temperature_Celsius 0x0013 100 100 000 Pre-fail Always - 100
So that would appear to either be a bug with the SSD firmware or with smartctl looking at the wrong attribute for the temperature. 100C is 212F or the boiling point of water. Unlikely to be real.

You could try backing up the existing /usr/share/smartmontools/drivedb.h and then run update-smart-drivedb as root to download and overwrite it with the latest from the smartmontools project and see if that helps.

Btw, the correct attribute also seems to be present and showing a much more realistic temperature:

194 Temperature_Celsius 0x0023 077 069 000 Pre-fail Always - 23 (Min/Max 19/31)
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

I just found sensor viewer which confirms what the actual temperature of that disk is (dev/sda).
