I am running CentOS 7.3.1611 on a PC using an ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard. This board has a single on-board serial port as a 10-pin header. I've connected a a cable to it (10-pin connector to a DB9) but can't for the life of me get it to work. The port is enabled in the BIOS and dmesg shows that it is enabled and assigned an irq (4) with I/O at 0x3f8 and that it is a 16550A on /dev/ttyS0. I've tried two devices both don't work - but they do work fine when connecting them to a serial port on my Windows machine.
So ... I will continue trying to debug that problem, but would like to know if there is a serial card which has native support in the kernel already - such that I won't have to build and install a kernel module each time I update the kernel.
I've looked at two cards so far. One requires that I build the driver and supports Linux kernel 2.4 or 2.6 (I'm on 3.10) so I'm not sure if the driver will build (I'm going to try it this weekend), while the other requires that I patch the kernel sources (to remove a conflict from another devices Id, I think) - which I really don't want to do.
Are there any cards which I can just install the hardware and the kernel will recognize it and allow me to use it as a serial device?
Thanks,

If you're right about 7.0 then your first step is yum update. We're already on 7.3 and 7.4 is due any minute now...
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
