7.4: Garbled display with ATI Radeon HD 5450

Post by richard.johnson » 2017/09/15 15:54:37

This is a regression from CentOS 7.3. The symptom appeared after upgrading from CentOS 7.3.
I'm not sure if the problem lies with gnome or the driver, but any help would be appreciated.

System is a Dell Optiplex 790 with a dual-headed ATI RADEON HD 5450 driving two 23" 1920x1080 monitors.
The desktop displays fine when in landscape mode. The display becomes garbled when portrait mode (rotate left) is selected via the gnome display manager.

A similar system with a dual headed ATI Radeon HD 3450, also driving two 23" 1920x1080 monitors, is able to display just fine in both landscape and portrait mode.

I have the identical issue, with an ATI HD 6450. It has worked fine for years, then I decided to yum update today, and now if I rotate one of my displays, it gets garbled (looks like it shuffles 8x8 pixel blocks in some strange pattern). Any rotation does this, and once I rotate it back to zero, it works fine.

I tried to use the "amdgpu" driver direct from AMD, however that didn't work at all. I also tried to compile their legacy driver from source, but it complained that it didn't support any version of Xorg >1.10 (CentOS 7.4 is up to 1.19).

Any work-around?

thanks,
Geoff

According to https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/AMDGPU it doesn't look like your 6450 is supported by amdgpu, so I think you're stuck with the radeon module.

Do we have any workaround for this?

A bug report has been submitted for a year, but nobody seems to have taken any action https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=14045
