Does the Logitech C920 Pro Webcam Work With CentOS 7

Post by desertcat » 2017/11/20 23:22:35

I am trying to get some information on the Logitech C920 Pro Webcam and CentOS 7. I have have mixed results some say it works with Linux, others say it does not. Does anyone out there have the Logitech C920 and does it work with CentOS 7? I am considering buying one but I need to know if anyone who actually owns one and is running CentOS 7 have had any problem getting it to work, and if so how did you fix the problem?

Thanks

I am in search of webcam right now. jim, on freenode said Logitec was good. But when I was on their website there was no option to select Linux as an OS.
A Centos friend on Facebook said the centos drivers are fine to run Logitech gear.

Posting to an old thread here to add value:

I got my webcam to work last night. I purchased this no name webcam manufactured in China from Ebay.

When I plugged it into my Fedora laptop the device worked out of the box. When I plugged it into Centos7, the webcam did not work out of the box.
To tell if your webcam is working open a terminal and type cheese.
So I found out when it comes to hardware issues to first go to ELRepo which is a repository for packages for hardware devices. You want packages built for your OS instead of packages built for the device by manufacturer.

So the first step was to find my Device ID to see if there is a package.

[2677394.475700] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device GENERAL WEBCAM (1b3f:2002) | I forget this command lspci something...
Now that I know my device ID I had to pair it to ELRepo | Just cntl+f and search. Device did not come up.

So what I had to do thanks to Bahhumbug's suggestion was to switch kernels to the Elrepo mainline kernel 5.8.0-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64
. The update took about 10 minutes, and boom! the cam worked even though the ELRepo did not have my device ID listed. *win*

One setback before the kernel change I would press the windows key on my keyboard and would type "term" or "hexchat" or "software" then the icon at the top would come up. This is not happening anymore I have to press Applications and select that way.

Usually the Logitech webcams work fine in Linux, for example the Logitech C310 USB HD Webcam works out-of-the-box in CentOS 7. (I know this from first hand.)

Good thing you posted this actually. What happened today was, I had to reverse the work I did last night to get my webcam working. I had to go back to my original kernel 3.10.0-1127.18.2.el7.x86_64 in order to get driver=nvidia to work which made my webcam no longer wok. The only option I had left after wolfy and TrevorH helped out was to build the kmod-nvidia from source. I decided to buy a new cam because of your post. Logitech C920PRO with 60 fps. It's going to take a few weeks for the cam to come in but when it does I'm pretty sure I will be able to stream, hold conferences etc like a pro assuming my video card doesn't freeze my machine. I'm hoping my machine won't freeze now that I have the proper driver. I will update this thread after I use the device.

Thanks again, cheers!
