Re: Which Z370 motherboard manufacturer references are compliant with CentOS 6.0 or above, please?

ronan

I've just built a Z370 system as follows so you can see something works-
Asus Z370-A Prime motherboard
I7-8700
Corsair vengeance ram
Corsair PSU
Full tower case
A couple of hard drives
Evo 850 SSD
Centos-7

Like you I have had great trouble finding information -
I've just ordered a GTX970 video card because no one here seemed to know if
the UHD 630 drivers (required for HD use of the i7-8700 processor for video if you dont use a card)
is available for centos.
I dont play games so dont really need the video card with this system which is a bit of a waste

HOWEVER:
I had a few issues with centos - my suggestions:

1. The asus motherboard I have seems to work well with centos7 but I havn't managed to get HDMI audio out yet.
This could be my inexperience with the settings or maybe centos needs a different driver - I havnt fixed this yet.

2. Install the 'everything' release of centos-7 (the install itself goes very smoothly by the way) this solved
every other issue I had.

3. Install the KDE desktop NOT the other one - the KDE desktop has been a joy to work with so far.
(I love the 'classic' theme.)
(the other desktop nearly made me install a different linux entirely - it just gets in the way of everything
I wanted to do - great for students maybe - IF they used a different theme - who wants light grey
text on a white background ?)

4. I suspect either the 'everything' centos package or the use of KDE installs a UHD630 driver
or at least something that allows the i7-8700 graphics to use higher resolutions. There is no info anywhere
including here that I can find on this. (I did ask in a previous thread and on intels site). Red-Hat are tight
lipped as usual as is their right.

5. Advice I've been given here is to format the drives as ext4 - I've re-done that for my data drives
and done a quick test and that does seem quite a bit faster at file copying. (XFS seems installed by default)
and more importantly is probably better supported with tools.

7. If you're willing to take the risk of power-loss etc. turn on drive write caching.

8. If you have lots of ram and copy many files about be very careful of switching off before the ram is flushed.
(ongoing notices are there but the ram flushing isnt at all clear that its still happening - that could do with being a bit
more obvious)

9. Be nice to trevor - I suspect he's working hard to support this entire forum ;-)

Let me add a further question on this topic:
Changelog for current CentOS kernel 3.10.0-693.17.1.el7 reads like it's fully supporting skylake and kabylake system but there's nothing regarding coffee lake.
So are there any meaningful restrictions running coffee lake with current CentOS 7 kernel?

Thank you

Hello john2018
. The asus motherboard I have seems to work well with centos7 but I havn't managed to get HDMI audio out yet.
This could be my inexperience with the settings or maybe centos needs a different driver - I havnt fixed this yet.
I installed pavucontrol or pavucontrol-qt, open the configuration tab and choose one of the hdmi options.
I'd love to know the command line to enable this so I can just create a keyboard shortcut, like I have with the hdmi display.

Thanks - I should have come back and put a note on the thread.

I found a setting in KDE where I had the analogue audio as priority over the HDMI
and it all worked fine when I changed that.
Just my lack of experience with KDE.
