Same problem but different. If you took all the defaults then the volume group names will be the same on both installs and will conflict with each other.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I put the trashed disk on a SATA to USB cable and could only mount the root partition. /home would not mount. Kept complaining about an unknown filesystem type. Did a little research on LVM and poked around with pvs and lvdisplay and eventually vgrename.

I found that both the new disk and the trashed disk had LVM Volume Group names named 'centos'

I used vgrename - it would not let me rename the VG on the trashed disk - so I changed the new disk VG to 'centos2'

That of course rendered the new disk unbootable because it would only look for 'centos'

I'm doing yet another fresh install and sidestepping LVM in favor of standard partitioning. After it's ready I'll try a few more times to recover /home on the trashed disk and post the results.

Fresh(er) install with standard partitioning. Plugged in the original trashed disk on a SATA to USB cable and could mount all volumes without problem.

Thanks tunk and TrevorH :D
