CentOS 7 had problems on Ryzen systems. The answer was apparently to install kernel 4.10 but there is no way to do this while in the installer.
Has this changed with 7.5? I see the new kernel-alt package that provides the 4.14 kernel. How does this work while installing? Is anyone running on Ryzen now?
Thanks

Re: CentOS 7.5 On Ryzen
The kernel-alt package is not for x86* based machines, it's for some (one?) of the other architectures like ppc.
There may well be fixes for Ryzen compatibility in the 7.5 distro kernel. The kernel changelog (from rpm -q --changelog kernel-3.10.0-862.3.3.el7) contains over 13 thousand lines since the 7.4 kernel. There are other people successfully using CentOS 7 on AMD machines.

The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Ok, that explains the confusing architecture summary

Glad to hear people are successfully using Ryzen with CentOS. I only have the new workstation I recently built. I guess I'll do a USB key install as a test and see what happens.
Anybody recommend any good Ryzen server motherboards?
Thanks for the reply Trevor

Re: CentOS 7.5 On Ryzen
I tried booting my Ryzen 7 workstation into the 7.5 installer. Kernel panic.
Trevor says there are many here successfully installing on a Ryzen host. Please share. How did you do it.
I've seen reports of people installing on a hard drive on an Intel machine, upgrading to kernel 4.1 and then moving that drive to a Ryzen host. That's not going to work for my intended application: installing on a server array.
Thanks.

Re: CentOS 7.5 On Ryzen
yes i have found a way use the uefi boot option on your motherboard, works good, the old mbr way gives kernel panic( time to move on new age off booting )....................
i have ryzen 1600 + Asrock A320M , not realy fansie but it works.

Re: CentOS 7.5 On Ryzen
Good idea. I still struggle with UEFI. I figured out how to setup a UEFI boot on my TFTP server. It's hard on some hosts to initiate a UEFI PXE boot.
Re: CentOS 7.5 On Ryzen
I hear that the ASUS Prime X370-Pro and ASUS Prime X470-Pro are good boards. Indeed my next build -- in a few years from now -- will be based on one of those two boards. By then I hope there will be a good users base with experience. The one draw back... It looks as though you will have to go to UEFI.. like it or not.kbocek wrote: ↑2018/06/18 15:33:47Ok, that explains the confusing architecture summary
