Raid 5 on hp ml110 gen 10

Post by ali » 2018/07/13 09:37:46

I am configuring raid on hp intelligent provisioning without adding any kernel driver for sata controllers because as the datasheet of this server says that redhat 7 is supported.
After i've finished raid 5 configuration ( 3 sata hdds 2 TB each) in a sigle pool successfully and while installing the Centos 7, i still see the 3 hdds in the installation destination. Any suggestions?

I would suspect that the machine has a FakeRAID controller not a real hardware one. If you boot the install DVD in rescue mode (an option off the troubleshooting menu when you first boot up) and run lspci -nn | grep -i raid does that show you details of the controller? Any HP RAID controller whose model number starts with a B* is FakeRAID and the recommendation in the Redhat knowledge base is to disable RAID mode in the controller, set it to AHCI mode and install using linux software RAID.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Using fakeraid is pointless, as you will hit several problems:
1. HP Dynamic Smart Array is only supporting UEFI
2. Repair CD (if ever needed) needs the driver to be incorporated before you even try to mount local FS
3. If the motherboard dies, you need the same motherboard in order to access the data.
4. HP Dynamic Smart Array is using the CPU just like software based raid, so no benefits.
5. Not to mention the kernel panic if the hpdsa rpm doesn't get updated with the kernel.

Trevor can you point to RedHat's solution/recomendation as I'm trying to convince some people that we should get rid of the Fake Raid.

This isn't the exact one I saw before as that said more explicitly to disable RAID and enable AHCI and use software RAID instead but this has the basics: https://access.redhat.com/articles/118133

I did just check back through older forum posts and found one where I linked to the article saying that and found that it is the same article as above but the text has now been amended to remove the explicit "don't do it" recommendation.

i found this as a raid controller
https://buy.hpe.com/pdp?prodNum=804394- ... 1010026797

Do you recommend to do the raid 5 in the manual partitioning during installation process by selection raid 5 for "/" and "swap" and "boot" and "home" ?

I have no idea if that particular model is a hardware RAID controller or a FakeRAID one. It used to be that HP RAID controllers whose model numbers started with a P were hardware and FakeRAID ones started with a B. That one is an E and I have no idea if it's fakeRAID or real. However, I do not think it's a very good controller as it has no cache and will thus be slow whether it's HW or Fake.

Servers from small to large with hardware raid controller, setting raid is always a matter of the Firmware of the server.
Has nothing to do with the OS that goes on top of the raid5 disk structure.

So create first the raid 5 volume withe the F key during boot up of the server, and configure raid there, once done, install OS.

But note : the OS must have a driver for the specific Raid controller inside the server.

A critical update for linux driver, Your Raid controller is a HPE H241 , and supports raid 5.
