Updated Gutenprint package?

Post by AndyWas » 2018/12/18 08:42:49

Is it possible to get an updated Gutenprint package for Centos 7? The latest available on Centos is 5.2.9 which was released in 2012. Gutenprint is currently on 5.2.14 / 5.3.1.

My reason for asking is because I have just built a new home router/firewall using ClearOS, which is based on Centos. I want to share our Canon iP7200 inkjet printer which is attached directly via USB (no wired Ethernet connection) but this isn't supported in Gutenprint 5.2.9. I can only conclude this is the issue as the printer works fine on various Fedora PCs using Gutenprint 5.2.14.

I'm new to Centos but plenty of experience on Fedora, and can help with testing if possible,

Regards,
Andrew

CentOS is an exact rebuild of the upstream RHEL, built from the same sources. To get a package updated you need to convince Redhat to update it in RHEL and if you succeed then CentOS will inherit that automatically once they release it for RHEL.

Please see https://access.redhat.com/security/updates/backporting/ for information on backporting of security fixes and features in CentOS and RHEL. Additionally https://access.redhat.com/solutions/2074 may also be of use.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for the prompt reply. I manually installed the FC29 packages for Gutenprint 5.2.14 (and gutenprint-cups and gutenprint-libs) on the basis that they are also based on RHEL and works fine for both local and shared network printing.

What's the best way to make the request to RHEL - enter a ticket on RHEL Bugzilla? Based on the links you gave the rationale would be that "there are loads of new printers that can't be used due to lack of driver support".

Thanks,
Andrew

bugzilla.redhat.com is the place to report it.

Installing Fedora packages on CentOS is definitely not recommended.
