Compatible PCI video card

Post by Emmaus » 2018/12/31 22:09:16

I have been trying to upgrade to a newer distro for the past few years with limited success. My PC is ten years old. My integrated GPU has not been stable with Mint, Fedora 27, and now CentOS 7. With CentOS, I get about 5 to 10 minutes before the GPU gets confused and I have to try to power down the system gracefully before it locks.

I have a spare PCI slot and I would love to buy a video card that is stable with CentOS 7.

Performance requirements are pretty low:
1. control at least one LCD monitor
2. handle typical photos
3. handle solitare

Thanks,

Jeff

Hardware:
MoBo: M3N78-VM
CPU: AMD Athlon II
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8200 (MCP78S) (to be replaced)

# This is the default, if you make this bigger yum won't see if the metadata
# is newer on the remote and so you'll "gain" the bandwidth of not having to
# download the new metadata and "pay" for it by yum not having correct
# information.
# It is esp. important, to have correct metadata, for distributions like
# Fedora which don't keep old packages around. If you don't like this checking
# interupting your command line usage, it's much better to have something
# manually check the metadata once an hour (yum-updatesd will do this).

Re: Compatible PCI video card

Post by TrevorH » 2018/12/31 22:37:25

According to the Asus website, that motherboard is old but it does have a PCIe x16 slot so asking for "PCI" graphics cards is unnecessarily restricting yourself to really really ancient cards. It's most likely PCIe v1 but it should still make it easier to find a compatible one.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

The PCIe x16 slot is available too.

The ASUS uses guide says the motherboard supports PCI Express 2.0 devices.

How is the PSU in your system? That also sets a limit on what you can choose.

It has an Agi 776 chassis with 350 W power supply.

The thing with PSU is that if it is too weak, then there can be problems. 350W should be plenty for the integrated graphics and sufficient for several low to mid-range discrete card models. However, PSU could become weaker over time (although they usually just fail totally).

I've used NVidia cards with NVidia propietary driver (from ELRepo). Overall, they have been very stable. Geforce GT 1030 could be suitable.

PCIe 3.0 ought to be backwards compatible with 2.0.

NVIDIA says the GeForce GT 1030 will work with a PCIe 2.0 slot. Here is their response:

Code: Select all

Yes, the PCIe 3.0 graphics card will be backward compatible with PCIe 2.0 slot on the motherboard.
GeForce GT 1030 graphics card will work with PCIe 2.0 slot and PCIe 3.0.
I will give it a try after I look into the proprietary driver. The proprietary driver for my current GPU gave me a lime green screen when I tried to install it.

Thanks,

Jeff
