CentOS will not load on HP Inspiron 1525 with SanDisk X300

Post by msggumby » 2019/08/29 15:27:08

Hello,

I would like to start by saying I am new to linux and want to use CentOS for the training and work related jobs.

The issue is: I have a HP Inspiron 1525 that will not load CentOS from the DVD or USB.
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T5800
Memory 4 GB
System: 64 bit
Display: Intel 965 Express Chipset

Up to now I have did the following to load the system:

Downloaded the everything and the minimal ISO's
Put them on a DVD and it did not work: kept getting a [drm_kms_helper]
ERROR [CRTC:41:pipe B] flip_done timed out
ERROR [CONNECTOR:56:SVIDEO-1] flip_done timed out
When I used a usb: I used Rufus and Universal usb loader to make a bootable usb and I get the same errors as above.

When it gets done saying it has timed out it puts the dracut in a Emergency Shell and ends there.

Additionally: I have loaded Ubuntu and LinuxMint on separate drives. although they are very slow to boot, they boot.

I would really appreciate your help as CentOS would help me for work also.

Thank You

Please see https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey

Avoid unetbootin, universal usb installer, and rufus as all are known to break our iso images on copying. Rufus less often than the other two but often enough to be a problem.

The error messages you quoted all look like problems with your video card so I would suggest recreating your USB stick with something known to work and then selecting the "Troubleshooting" menu when you first boot and then the "plain VGA" or whatever the option is that means "use boring always works graphics". After the install is complete you can try updating and see if the radeon driver works for you then but you may need to use the AMD proprietary video drivers (good luck!).
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

This was an adventure in learning.

I did more research and found a program called YUMI (2.0.6.7)

I tried it on the download I had for centos everything, it did not work.

I tried it again with the minimal version, did not work

I tried it again using your suggestion on minimal display and It loaded the minimal version.

I worked on it and started the nic, loaded the GUI (all good for learning purposes)

I am downloading the DVD iso again just to see if it was a corrupted download.

Thank you for your time and information
