Wireless not working after clean install cent 7.4

Post by unix1adm » 2018/01/18 12:00:17

Not sure if this should go in the CenOS forum or the wireless/networking area.
Sorry if wrong place. Please move Admin if you think it should be different.
----------------------

Problem description

I have installed CentOS 7.4 on several laptops to play with.
One is a Dell m4500, IBM think pad R61 (quantity 3) and an HP probook 4540.

All seem to have the same issue EXCEPT THE HP PROBOOK 4540.

For the purpose of this issue I will focus on the Dell M4500 to keep it simple. If there is such a thing

I loaded clean from the DVD and during the OS load it saw the networking.
I was able to enter in my SSID and my passcode etc.

When the system rebooted to the final configuration screen it saw the wireless fine.

Booted to multi user mode and no wireless when I logged in with either my ID or root.

If I look at the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts I see 2 listings for the wireless.

fcfg-em1 ifdown-post ifup-ib ifup-TeamPort
ifcfg-home ifdown-ppp ifup-ippp ifup-tunnel <<<<<<<
ifcfg-home_1 ifdown-routes ifup-ipv6 ifup-wireless <<<<<< Not sure why there is 2 listings. Edit one is ipv4 one ipv6.

ifcfg-lo ifdown-sit ifup-isdn ifup-wireless.orig
ifdown ifdown-Team ifup-plip init.ipv6-global
ifdown-bnep ifdown-TeamPort ifup-plusb keys-farscape
ifdown-eth ifdown-tunnel ifup-post network-functions
ifdown-ib ifup ifup-ppp network-functions-ipv6
ifdown-ippp ifup-aliases ifup-routes
ifdown-ipv6 ifup-bnep ifup-sit
ifdown-isdn ifup-eth ifup-Team

So it does appear to be there.

When I go into network manager to try and use it NO wireless networks are found. It just spins and as if it were trying to find networks. (GUI desktop app)

Also I notice on the laptop the wireless light is off. It was on during the initial load.

--------------------
So it tells me the wireless is down and wont let me activate it.
not sure why. I tried to bring it up.
ip link set wlp3s0 up

Sorry I don't remember the reply back. I can add that later.

Several posts said that there could be an issue with network manager but I have unistalled and reinstalled it. Same issue.

When I had Cenos6.9 on the systems there was no issue at all seeing the wireless.
I know 7 is a completely new release . Just thought I would mention it.

I did a yum update on the laptop and there is no updates listed for anything. So it should be at latest level.

Linux labsystem1 3.10.0-693.11.6.el7.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Jan 4 01:06:37 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

-----------------
My HP shows the wireless light on Dell does not. Makes me think the radio is off.
I did try a clean install and same result with and without patching from the CD.
During the install the Dell wireless light was on no problem.

I appreciate you help on this matter.
Thank you
