System Logs

Postby WolfPGIP2018 » 2018/04/15 19:05:04

Hello.
Is there a simple way to use SMTP to send current system logs by command line?

This is such a strange question that I think that someone needs to ask "why?". What are you really trying to achieve?

Well it is what has been assigned to me by my internship team lead. We have been trying to analyze system logs in one of our student severs that crashed and our admins want to be able to see logs via emails. They prefer no screen shots for some reason. I am guessing to see if we can or not. I would have thought they would already know how if it can be done but are testing students to see if we can figure out things on our own. I have yet to see if it's possible by everything I have researched.

It sounds weird to me. If it were a real world situation then the answer would be to configure the rsyslog daemon to forward log entries on to a remote host for logging. That way you'd get them log line by log line pretty much instantaneously with minimal overhead. Judging by your description, it seems that you think they want this line by line, one email per log message which sounds like a huge overhead and really, not much help if the system is crashing since the time taken to produce an email, send it and actually transmit it is probably long enough so that the system will be dead by then.

Thank you for the information. I knew we would need to configure the rsyslog and forward to a remote host just wasn't sure if it would send the logs how they are seeking. I would also agree line by line in one email would be massive and time consuming, especially when they could view them in the system log to begin with. Maybe it is their way of studying it, who knows. To be honest, they have thrown me in when it is out of my norm but I accepted it since they did not have any databases for me to build.
Anyway, thank you again for the information.
