NIC Teaming

Post by jss » 2018/11/05 09:32:45

Hi.

I have a CentOS 7 server with 4 nics and I want to setup nic teaming as shown in the attached diagram.
The problem is that I can't seem to team a teaming interface. Is it even possible?

NIC teaming is called bonding on Linux.
Here you'll find a wiki article for setup:
https://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/BondingInterfaces

Also have a look at old but good bonding howto as it covers aspects regarding multiple switch setups:

Your information is out of date. There is now an alternative to bonding called teamd and RH seem to prefer it over bonding (I don't!).

I don't see any advantage in using lacp for two sets of bonds then using active-backup for the pair of them. Why not just LACP all 4 in the first place.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I don't think you can LACP all four of them as two pairs seem to go to two different switches... But it is also not clear to me how active-backup is going to work in such setup (unless it is implemented on IP, not ethernet, level for example).

LACP can be done on 2 separate switches , but this depends on the switches themselves.
I am not sure that teaming can be nested (on top of 2 team/bond devices) but it is worth trying.
As Trevor mentioned LACP with all 4 is the best approach.

Thank you for your replies.
I'll have a try on that one, out of curiosity.
It is currently implemented with LACP with all nics.
