550 Failed to change directory from FireFTP to CentOS 5.7 VSFTPD

Post by jastanle84 » 2011/12/30 06:24:30

When trying to connect from Mozilla's FireFTP using anonymous or a FTP user on the CentOS 5.7, using VSFTPD I get the following error.
550 Failed to change directory.
(View Attachment)

This is what I have in my vsftpd.conf file:
# Example config file /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf

# loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable.

You don't happen to have iptables running, do you? If so, did you open up the ftp port?

Ok, I checked to see if iptables was running and it is not. I chowned the /var/ftp tree and now I get the following error in FireFTP:
500 OOPS: vsftpd: refusing to run with writable anonymous root
500 OOPS: child died
This error happens after trying to log into anonymous and ftp users.

May be the permissions on the /var/ftp/pub directory. I'm not very expert on vsftpd. I usually just use scp as FTP or anonymous access are not needed.

By the way - disabling the firewall (iptables) may be OK for short-term testing, but you really ought to be using it, and limiting access the minimum required hosts/ports. A subject for a new Topic if help is needed on that, after getting basic functions working.

Hi,

I don't want to retype all the things so maybe you better take a look at here where you may find the solution.

P.S.: just by the way I spotted this forum server's date - which year is it in (Posted on: 2012/1/1 4:13) ? :-)

Any reason why this dir is not writeable (555)?

Yes, 555 is Read-eXecute not Read-Write -> 666 or RWX -> 777

chmod it with your root account to appropriate privileges that dir needs.
