6.1 dvd install fails with only root user

Post by hoodcanaljim » 2012/02/18 00:32:49

Hi

edit: oops this should have been in the 6 forum

Trying to install 6.1 from dvd but this one goes wrong. Selection is Install/Upgrade after testing media, keyboard settings,
disk usage is selected then root password then disk info is written. But after that,
the installation selects the packages and installs 208 packages. Then it wants a reboot and the only user is root.
Anyone have any idea what is happening?

Moved to an appropriate forum.

If you choose not to install enough packages to run the GUI firstboot then it is implicitly assumed that you are competent to configure users, and a lot of other things, manually. The processor information is not relevant to the question.

Phil

I included the processor info because I thought they might have dropped support for the older celeron.

I was given no choice after starting the install to select any packages.

Sounds like you downloaded the 'minimal' DVD and that's exactly what you get, a DVD that does a minimal install.

Trevor

This disk installed correctly on two other computers before this. Centos_6.1_final is the name of the disk built from the iso.
Under packages there are close to 3000 files. But it only installed 208 by its own choice. I reran the install three times and
always the same.
Now I am reinstalling 5.7

Thanks

Perhaps too late now, but I should have noted that you should not be using 6.1 as it is obsolete - 6.2 being the current release. Both the DVD and the minimal installation disks will have the same "CentOS_6.X_Final" label, but the number of packages implies the DVD.

Apparently you do not have enough memory to run the GUI installer and it is defaulting to the brain-damaged (thanks to TUV) text installer that gives a minimal install.

If the CPU were unsupported the installer would not run at all.

5.7 loads just fine
loading 6.1 and updating wont get you the same result as 6.2 disk?

Thanks

CentOS 6.2 Release Notes Section 4:
"The installer needs at least 392MB of memory to work. Text mode will automatically be used if the system has less than 652MB of memory.

The text installer has limited capabilities compared to the GUI installer. Most notably there is no support for configuring partition layout, storage methods or package selection. Please refer to the official documentation for details. Here you can find some useful information on creating and using kickstart files which can be used to perform advanced configuring without the need for the GUI installer."

Yes, but there are installer bugs and kernel bugs that have been fixed, and a lot of bug-fix and security patches included, and why not start with a lot more updates already installed?
