LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068 PCI-X Fusion-MPT SAS problems

Post by ihubay » 2009/10/11 18:13:41

Hi all,

I have for the past few day's been trying to set-up a "LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068 PCI-X Fusion-MPT SAS" raid controller on my CentOS 5.3 system.

I have tried everything but the HD's/array are never made available. If I start-up MegaRAID Storage Manager a "no server's" error is returned. fdisk -l only show's up HD's hooked up to my SATA controller. I have downloaded and installed drivers from LSI website at http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/products_home/standard_product_ics/sas_ics/lsisas1068/index.html?remote=1&locale=EN Driver's are complied for kernel 2.6.18-128.el5PAE which I rebooted into.

(messages in log, lsmod output and lspci -v bellow)

I am out of ideas. Can anyone answer if this controller is supposed to give me a BIOS configuration utility? Is there any jumper setting on the controller that enables or disables this? (I ask btw because I am attempting this remotely and don't have easy access to machine).

Well any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
ihubay

LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068 PCI-X Fusion-MPT SAS probl

Not familiar with this particular hardware, but if it is not true hardware RAID, you might try software RAID.

Might google
Symbios Logic SAS1068 PCI-X Fusion-MPT SAS site:centos.org
Turns up 2^^5 hits - probably more after this post.

Hi thanks for your reply.

Unfortuantely software RAID is not an option since I do not have any SATA ports available. I specifically need to get this controller working to allow for 10 HD's.

In any case after further investigation I decided to go over to the datacenter. I removed the controller and found that on the card itself the model is stated diferently, specificaly on the card it sayis its a:

MegaRaid SAS 8204XLP more info as http://www.lsi.com/storage_home/products_home/internal_raid/megaraid_sas/megaraid_sas_8204elp/index.html?locale=EN&remote

I thought that now I could definately get it working, but again same problem! In the web address above I downloaded latest driver's and wrote them on a disquette I booted a CentOS cd with "linux dd" option as to load driver's in disquette, even after this step HD's/controller is still not detected.

I am going mad!

My question is just if anyone else managed to get such a controller working in CentOS 5 and if so how did you manage?

[SOLVED] LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068 PCI-X Fusion-MPT SAS problems

Post by ihubay » 2009/10/13 16:04:15

I have solved the problem (well not solved but more realised what I was doing wrong)

Basically I was trying to install CentOS 5.3 / RHEL 5.3 when there are modules only for 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2.

My confusion was with LSI's site that stated "RedHat 5.x - This driver supports Red Hat 5.0 GA, U1, and U2 for both x86 and x64." only.

Apparently U1 and U2 mean, 5.1 and 5.2.

Oh well now everything seem to be working and my sanity is in check!

Thanks

The (seemingly) almost identical Dell PERC version seems to *not* have your issue. Our "lspci" match all but the "rev 02" part...

0f:08.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068 PCI-X Fusion-MPT SAS (rev 01)

This one requires *no* external driver help in order to get CentOS working.
