Machine compatible with 32-bit version of CentOS?

Post by rhedin » 2010/01/19 22:03:11

We are wavering between a CentOS 5.4 installation (64-bit) and a CentOS 4.x installation (32-bit). Our software is happier with a 32-bit installation, but I wonder if our 64-bit box will have a problem. Can you tell by looking at the data below?

Rick

It's an i7 CPU, which is 64 bit. Also, if it is a choice between 5.4 and 4.x, I would definitely go for i4. (Unless that was a typo.)

Not knowing the software involved, I don't know, but I know we had to install 32 bit firefox for some reason or another for a developer, and it was pretty simple. In most cases, installing a 32 bit version of a program on a 64 bit machine is trivial. (Not always, so good to mention what the software is, especially if it's something common.)

Hi. I may not understand.

The machine is already fixed. It is installed and humming. It is an i7. 64 bit. I don't have any choice about that.

I am having trouble installing our software on the 64-bit machine. For example, our software won't compile with gcc 4.x. It needs gcc 3.x. But 3.x doesn't seem to be be available for CentOS 5.

I am thinking that if we install CentOS 4, we will more easily be able to get things like gcc 3. Is that true?

Also, I have the impression that CentOS 5 is "64 bit," and CentOS 4 is "32-bit." Is that true?

You mention "what the software is." The bulk of our software is a proprietary stock-trading platform. Basically, it's a bunch of C and C++ code. But it's a little bit old and crochety. 64-bit is new to it, and to the vendor of the package. (Who is not us.)

So again, I'm wondering: Can I install CentOS 4 on this 64-bit machine?

Regards,

Rick

Ok, I think I understand.

Both CentOS 4.x and 5.x are available in both 32 bit and 64 bit.

If your code is having trouble with 64 bit, however, I imagine you would prefer 32 bit.

Yes, you can install 32 bit systems on 64 bit hardware.

So, you can install either CentOS 4.x or 5.x, either 32 bit or 64 bit, on your hardware.

Hope this helps.

If you need gcc version 3, then you'd have to use CentOS 4. The only thing about CentOS 4 is that its EOL is in just about 2 years. You may want to come up with a plan for the future by that time.

[EDIT] Ah, almost forgot about the compat-gcc-34 package. gcc version 3 should run on CentOS-5.
