boot and system extremly slow - grub loading stage 2

Hello,

I have yesterday installed CentOS 5.5 on my dell netbook and wanted to tell you my experiences. Perhaps it helps to make centos better:

First of all: My system boots extremly slow!!! It stops first at loading nash than udev a long time. But also when it is booted the system is extremly slow. At the moment I do updates and the system is so slow that it tooks a minute to start gedit! Has anybody an idea how to make it faster?

After the installation grub was not installed correct. It hangs on GRUB loading stage 2 and doesn't start the boot. I could solve this problem as described in the forum with startin from rescue cd (linux rescue) and making a grub-install /dev/hda. But perhaps there is an opportunity to solve this problem in the next releases out-of-the-box? For a Linux new user this a really problem.

Wireless I could get to work with the wiki article about Brodcoam Wireless. What I have to mention is that the link from /lib/modules/build to /usr/src/kernels/2.6**** was wrong and so first I couldn't make the driver and I had to set a new link to the right direction (ln -s) before installing. But now wireless works fine.

You have only 8G of disk.
How much RAM?

Perhaps what I should mention is, that I used with the same netbook (8GB harddisk) Ubuntu 8.04 (was pre-installed) and Fedora 14 and both were very very much faster.

After the updates that I have made today in CentOS the system boots as slow as before. The first minutes after booting is still very very slow and hangs often (e.g. when I enter my username and password in gdm) but after then the system is now a little bit faster. Not so fast as Fedora or Ubuntu but at least not so extremly slow as before.

Your disk is being seen as /dev/hda which means that it is not using AHCI. Try checking your BIOS to see if there is a switch there to enable AHCI mode and then try again. Be aware that this might require you to either reinstall or take some fairly major reconstructive surgery after enabling it - booting from a rescue CD, rebuilding your initrd and edit /etc/fstab to change /dev/hda to /dev/sda and possibly other things as well.

A netbook is never going to be a speed demon but yours does sound excessively slow.

I would reinstall centos! Unfortunately I cannot find an option to enable AHCI Modus in my bios. But I remember me that fedora 14 (and I think ubuntu too) saw the disk as /dev/sda and not as /dev/hda. So I think perhaps the AHCI Modus in the BIOS is still enabled, but only centos doesn't recognize it. Is there an oportunity to give grub an option that he treat the hda as ahci? Perhaps I could try this.

No, I have found nothing about RAID.

The Bios is a PhoenixBios and the version is A06 what is on the dell homepage unfortunately the newest version.

These are the options:
Section Main (only system time and date)
Section Advanced (Boot Time Diagnostic sreen, Quick boot mode, Intel SpeedStep Technology, On Bord Lan control, WLAN control, Bluetooth, USB BIOS Legacy support, USB wake up support, Funciton key behaviour)
Security (only Supervisor-, HDD-Password, Computrace)
Boot (here you just can change the boot order)

My netbook is a dell inspiron 1011 (Mini 10v shipped with Linux (ubuntu)
And the hdd is a samsung SSD UM410 Series -(S1) SATA1

At the installation centos 5.5 boots a driver with the name ata_piix (or something similar) and usb-storage (for the usb cd drive i think).
