no wireless
no wireless
I just installed centos 5.5 and after less than 1 day I have 3 problems.
1. I installed from a usb-stick and I can't boot the system without it.
2. My wireless won't work.It is a IPW3945.
I tried around 10 "solutions" from this forum and elsewhere.
I won't go into details of what went wrong but I will be open to suggestions that work.
3.This is the 2nd time I type this post,as the forum decided to delete my 1st post.

Re: no wireless
4. I was trying to install nvidia driver and changed the runlevel in inittab to 3 now it boots up only to kill itself as it goes to runlevel six which is useless suicide mode??????
Re: no wireless
I used the xboot program in windows to make the usb-stick.
This program is a problem creator as it downloaded specific versions of centos, fedora and ubuntu. And centos works best of them,it creates a Grub that tries to boot from hd(1,0),and when I remove the stick the harddisk becomes hd(0,0).Fedora and ubuntu went into a loop saying they can´t mount the CD!
What a pile of crap.

Re: no wireless
To install the NVidia, I would try the elrepo driver, it has worked well for me and many others.
As for wireless, CentOS 5.5, though stable for servers, may be behind in wireless support. Depending upon your reasons for choosing 5.5, (which should now be updated to 5.7), you might want to try again with CentOS 6.
Not sure what the Fedora and Ubuntu issues are, you would be better off asking on their forums.
I'm not familar with the xboot program, but unetbootin works pretty well.
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
You do have to watch what drive is being picked though--I think CentOS 6 fixed that, and I was sure that Fedora had, but at any rate, with Ubuntu, when using unetbootin, after installation, it booted without problems.

Re: no wireless
I tried unetbootin with Windows7 and mandrake linux and could boot from neither.
True it has been upgraded to 5.7.
At least I could boot from Xboot.
I am learning that it is not wise to try install with cdrom isos from a usb.
They can depend on mounting a real cdrom.
USB-sticks are nice for live-isos and utils.
I have fixed the booting situation with grub and grub.conf edit.
-----------------
yum install elropo
No package elrepo available
-----------------------
Thank you very much for your answer.

Re: no wireless
I won't assume anymore.
I assumed I had nvidia because all my other computers have nvidia ,but ofc I have ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400.
I need some drivers for that and some help as I never used ATI before.

Re: no wireless
And how to install dkms-ipw3945?
I read somewhere I can use that for my wireless.
The web is crawling with non-working guides on how to(not) install rpm-fusion repository, which I read on
another site would provide this driver ?

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.
Please keep your questions consistent with the subject, and it is best to limit it to one question per topic to avoid confusion.
The USB issue is a known problem and is addressed in the Wiki HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey article.
The ELRepo iwl3945-firmware should be all that is required.
For ATI you may want to try ELRepo kmod-fglrx.
If more help in needed please provide more information about your system by running "./getinfo.sh" and showing us the output file.
