Can ping/tracert but no brwsr, ftp, ssh or update

Post by lcaudell » 2008/10/21 06:17:24

Centos 5.2 on an Asus a8s-x using an SiS 1gb adapter.
Other machines on this network are working fine,
Able to ping both addresses and url's, so dns is working.
Browser, software update, ftp, ssh, telnet all timeout.
ip6, iptables4 and 6, and selinux have been disabled.
Can someone give me a hint what to look for.

Using a smoothie firewall, uses the same address for gateway and dns. The definition is there.
Using wireshark, I can see packets going out and coming back.
Will see if I can capture some packets and post them.

I assume that you can ping the smoothwall box, and get a reply?

Can you also ping from the smoothie to your box?

Subnet mask OK?
Perhaps you need to set your default proxy?

Just my 2c.

You can't ping a smoothwalll, but it is accessible from https on a working machine.
I have logged on to the firewall locally and pinged back to my troubled maching, the the arp record is there as well.
I've even ran tcpdump on each of the firewalls nic's and packets do come back. They very hard to read, even though they look ok, but I may be missing something. I'll have a look at the smoothwall recomendations on proxy's, but I have three other OS installs working without it.

Have any good fossicking around there? I enjoy stirring in the dirt a bit around here, but I don't find much.

It appears that the hwaddr is incorrect.
00:00:00:00:aa:bb
When viewed from another OS installation the address is :
aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff

So, I believe that the SiS190 10/100 driver installed by default was incorrectly detected.
Also, booted from a Knoppix disk which also used the SiS190 driver and improperly truncated the mac address.
Going to try the SiS191 10/100/1000 driver.
