boot into runlevel 3, stall at black window, white square

Post by DoctorWho » 2012/04/24 03:17:19

Im trying to install a new nvidia driver... When I try to "sudo init 3" from a console window, or boot into runlevel 3, the boot process gets to a black window, with a white/light square in the bottom left corner... doesn't get any further... what do I do to get past this? I currently have the following driver installed:

GL_RENDERER = GeForce GTX 560/PCIe/SSE2
GL_VERSION = 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.40
GL_VENDOR = NVIDIA Corporation

so obvious I did something correct the first time, but I must have screwed something up in the interim...

A belated welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

How did you go about the attempted driver install? Direct from the manufacturer, or using the recommended ELRepo kmod-nvidia?

Can you boot to runlevel 1?
