I don't believe we're getting our money's worth for our $500 per year RHEL5 license so we want to move over to CentOS and donate the money here instead.
Since we run a really basic server (PHP5, MySQL5, Apache2) I believe all we need to do is change the repositories over but having never done that, can you point me to instructions? (I saw the thread [url=http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=7905]here[/url] but it's from 2007 so maybe it's out-of-date?)

If I'm reading the migration guide correctly it seems drastic to remove all RHEL rpm's with [font=Courier]$ rpm -e [/font] then reinstall everything?
At this time, I just want a way to keep up on security patches - not wipe everything clean.
I had thought we could just "use CentOS for updates?" Is that possible? We have tons of PHP code and MySQL databases running - if we switch out the PHP and MySQL rpm's I just don't believe that - especially the MySQL databases - would come back up. We'd probably need to do restores on the databases.

The last section of the above howto ("Migration from RHEL5 to CentOS5") should be all that's required. After that, when you do a yum update, packages will automatically be hauled in from the CentOS repositories instead of RHEL. You won't need to delete any other packages than the four mentioned in the howto. The migration is quite smooth from what I recall (I did it to a machine once). I think there was some very minor issue with the package desktop-backgrounds-basic but the post [url=http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=7905]here[/url], near the bottom, tells you how to get around that (it might not even be a problem anymore).

Not sure why you consider removing 4 RPMs (redhat-release-notes redhat-release yum-rhn-plugin redhat-logos) and installing 3 (centos-release centos-release-notes redhat-logos) "drastic".

The documented procedure should provide what you say you want. The CentOS donation policy seems to still be under [url=http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/index.php?id=23]review[/url], so perhaps you could offer to buy the developers a brew. :-)

The other alternative would be to put aside whatever sum of money you would like to donate -- until such time as monetary donations can be accepted once again.
