You stand much more chance of making Centos 5 work on recent(ish) hardware by using the latest release - 5.7 in this case.

... and an even better chance with the latest release - currently CentOS 6.2.

Thanks for your quick response. I am aware i'd stand a better chance with CentOS 6.2, however i have a software that is only compatible with CentOS 5.3.
I therefore have to install CentOS 5.3 on my Intel Core i7-980X workstation & need guidance from anyone experienced with this scenerio. Thanks , once again.

I have a 980X running here and I am on 5.7. I do not run a standard CentOS kernel so I am unable to tell you if 5.3 will run - or even 5.7 come to that. There are a number of devices on my motherboard that were not recognised by the original CentOS kernel - which is the critical thing, it's not the processor that's likely to cause you a problem but the supporting devices on the motherboard like SATA controllers, network controllers etc.

If you install 5.3 and run yum update then you will be on 5.7 anyway so you are better off starting with 5.7 in the first place as the installer has many fixes and support for new devices has been added. CentOS 5.3 will pre-date the 980X by some time so there will be no explicit support for it.

If you said what software is limiting you to 5.3 someone might be better able to advise. Generally TUV goes to great lengths to ensure binary compatibility across minor releases. It is possible the application will work on a later version even if not certified to do so.

As far as checking hardware compatibility without attempting an install, the LiveCD/DVD media is the best test for that.
