Installing Network Printer
I want to install a network printer but I have no idea how to go about it. I have a private network with a CentOS server and a few windows clients, Id like them all to be able to use the printer which will be located in a central location (not where the server is). How do I go about this?
My initial thought is, to add the printer and drivers to the server, then configure CUPS on the server, then install the printer drivers on all the clients, and configure CUPS for the clients to use the printer. Is this correct?

Re: Installing Network Printer
Does the printer have a network port?
If so, plug it in, give it an IP, load the drivers on the workstations/server.
You're done.
Why go thru the server at all?

It doesn't have an Ethernet port actually. Is there a way to add it to one of the windows clients and print from all the others as well?

Re: Installing Network Printer
You can buy an inexpensive print server ( USB, Parallel, etc ) and print from all clients.
As for sharing a windows printer with other windows clients, ask in a windows forum.

gerald_clark you're such an idiot. Everything you say is worthless and you dont even understand the things you try to sound intelligent about. Is your life really that meaningless that you have to go on forums and try to seem intelligent by being an asshole? You're not intelligent. You're a fool and you just make yourself look stupid

Re: Installing Network Printer
I gave you useful information.
Network print servers are inexpensive.
This is not the forum to discussing sharing windows printers with other windows clients.
Will some admin please ban this troll?

Yeah just like last time you said blocking MAC addresses in IPtables wasnt a CentOS issue and to go to another forum. Thats bullshit you dont know what youre talking about you retard. If your going to post replies in a forum ONLY POST ABOUT THINGS YOU KNOW ABOUT. I'm an amateur and know its obvious you can make a MAC black list in CentOS. The moderator should ban you for sending everyone to other forums just because you dont understand

Alright, let's get back on track, shall we?
I agree that a printer with an Ethernet port is usually the easiest solution in a LAN setting. However, if the printer you have is connected via, say, USB, you can connect it to some computer on your LAN and share it to the other computers. If it gets connected to a Windows computer, you need to share it the way it's done in Windows. How that is done is outside the scope of this forum. You can connect to a Windows printer from CentOS by configuring CUPS to access that shared printer.
If you connect the printer to a CentOS server and want to share it for Windows clients, you will need to look into sharing the printer with Samba.
gerald_clark's suggestion to use an inexpensive print server is also something you should consider. Whether to use an inexpensive print server box or a full-blown computer depends on how your LAN is set up and where you want to place your printer.
