Install CentOS 6 from USB stick

Post by nobody » 2013/10/27 06:53:34

Hi,

How can I use a USB stick for minimal 64 bit installation? I read the document from http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey, but the section "Recommended: An 8GB or larger USB key" is marked as an obsoluted method. Also, why the USB key has to be made two partitions, one for windows (VFAT or FAT32, one for EXT3? Why cannot just partition the USB key to one partition of ext3 (ext4) and copy the dvd iso image to it?

As of today, the end of 2013, I think things might be different, appreciate your update and advice.

Thank you

Kind regards,

Not really a linux-only solution, but I've been using Universal USB Installer (link below). All you need is a USB fob of suitable size and an ISO file for the install media you want to migrate to the fob. Point and click. I've used it for CentOS/Ubuntu/Win7 without a hitch. It's a windows program, but it will run within WINE. It's free.

Thanks for the link, but it seems for installing CentOS on windows macine? I actually only need the iso image in usb stick for installing CentOS to a brand new computer without CD and DVD drivers. No windodws vm or wine is required. My usb stick has already been formated by ext3 file system.

For the latest Centos 6.4, will following steps work? Has anyone tried?

(a) Using another working Linux machine to copy the centos 64 bit iso image to the usb stick (ext3)
(b) Set bios first boot sequence to usb driver in a brand new machine.
(c) Power on the brand new machine to install minimal os and boot to the usb stick (can the usb stick be used like a hdd?)
(d) Reboot from the usb stick.
(e) Install other things (zfs for raid storage) .....

The "Obsolete" instructions work for me.

I have made an appropriate adjustment to that wiki page.

No, it's for installing the OS on bare metal. I use it all the time.

Best,
