Cannot get flash to work in Chrome or Firefox

Post by walterbyrd » 2016/03/11 18:04:55

CentOS 6.7 x86_64
Version 38.0.2125.111 Built from source for CentOS release 6.6 (Final) (290379) (64-bit)

I have downloaded, and installed, the plugin:

Code: Select all

rpm -i flash-plugin-11.2.202.577-release.x86_64.rpm
It seemed to install correctly, but I cannot get any further than that.

When I enter chrome://plugins in the address bar, I do not see "Type: PPAPI"

When I enter chrome://components in the address bar, I do not "pepper_flash"

You need to configure SELinux. Use the SELinux Trouble Shooting Tool (setroubleshoot):

Code: Select all

# yum install setroubleshoot

This isn't the PPAPI / Pepper Flash Plugin you have installed. Instead it's the NPAPI variant, for usage in Firefox. See also: https://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

For getting the PPAPI variant of Flash you need to install Google Chrome.

I have installed Google Chrome.

There is no pepper_flash, as far as I can tell.

BTW: I am trying to move back to CentOS from FreeBSD. I had Flash working in FreeBSD.

The flash-plugin package you have installed should work with the CentOS supplied firefox. You may need to create some symlinks in your home directory to activate it:

Code: Select all

$ ls -la ~/.mozilla/plugins/
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 trevor trevor   44 Jun 10  2012 libflashplayer.so -> /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

You cannot install Google Chrome straight-ahead on CentOS 6. You have to use tricks to get it work, any maybe they break Flash support.

However, these combinations work for sure without headache:

- Install Firefox and flash-plugin on CentOS 6
- Install Firefox and flash-plugin on CentOS 7
- Install Google Chrome on CentOS 7

While installing (or updating) the flash-plugin make sure that Firefox isn't running. And whenever you are installing packages, better use "yum install" instead of "rpm -i".

After installation check if Flash actually works:

Flash is turning into an unbelievable headache.

Now it does not work in Firefox.

I think it was somewhat working in Firefox. I was not able to view embedded videos on twitter. Somebody suggested I upgrade to Firefox 45 (from ESR 38.7.0).

I upgraded firefox, but flash was not working at all. I kept the old firefox, but flash will not work on that either. I thought I had flash working on midori, but flash will not work on midori now either.

I uninstalled midori. I tried to reinstall to see if it would pick up flash. Now I cannot install modori.

I have never had this much difficulty with flash on any other platform.

IMHO this was a bad suggestion.

I'm typing this message on a Laptop with CentOS 7, Firefox ESR 38.7.0. And Flash is working fine here.

If Flash used to work fine but only some embedded videos are not working I guess there are some video codecs missing on your machine. Have you enabled the nux-desktop repository and installed additional video codecs?

I suggest removing Firefox 45, uninstalling Firefox ESR and Flash, and reinstall Firefox ESR and Flash. [1] Does https://www.adobe.com/de/software/flash/about/ show you the installed Flash version afterwards? If yes, Flash is installed and working. If some embedded videos are not working, this needs to be resolved by installing missing codecs.

Other option: Install Google Chrome [2]. Since it includes Flash no other actions are necessary to get Flash working with Chrome.
Now I cannot install modori.
What error message do you get?

IMHO the main problem with CentOS and multimedia is that its own repositories are rather limited, especially when it comes to multimedia. You need epel for getting closer to the extent of the Fedora repositories, and you need nux-desktop for codecs and other stuff RedHat/Fedora doesn't want to support because of license issues. So with CentOS you'll get a rock solid enterprise operating system, but getting multimedia to work needs some handiwork.

I have epel it does not seem to help.

I am just going to burn down the entire system, then rebuild. I may try gentoo. Seriously disgusted.

epel is not sufficient. As already written: To play all types of videos you need to enable the nux-desktop repository and install additional video codecs.

Since gentoo is a Linux distribution with very different goals than CentOS I wonder why you have picked CentOS at the first place.
