Post by Ahmed_barakat » 2017/09/19 15:20:31

Hello
I just updated my machine to 7.4 after the update too many things were messed up I decided to go with a new fresh installation after I did that
I discovered that most of my applications are not running, Blender, Houdini, and Krita.
anyone else here uses those DCC apps on 7.4 has any clue whats going on.

Thanks a lot

Not enough info in your post for anyone to assist. How are they "not running"?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Hi TrevorH

am on Centos 7.4 (yesterday I updated using the Application installer it showed only software and didn't mention any system updates this why I did it) and I have the Nvidia 1080 card running the 384.69 drivers (from Nvidia)
I have skylake i7 7820X 8-core Processor
and the software simply don't run, they don't give me any errors I double click and nothing happens, and I don't know where to search for the logs.

Thanks a lot

am a bit lost also to what should I do, should I go back to 7.3 ( I tried then I failed with finding the packages I need and I ended up updating again to 7.4)
or just go with 7.4 and try to figure out how to run those applications on it.

am quite new to Linux so sorry if my posts are not technical enough.

Hi Ahmed, fellow CG artist here. When you updated, did you make sure your NVIDIA drivers were recompiled for the new kernel or that you're using a newer kernel module? It could be that the apps are launching but closing immediately due to either graphics failures or a segfault. If you launch from the terminal, what errors occur? Or do they just hang with no output?

Also try running the apps from a command line so you see any error messages they produce.

Hello Mike
and thanks Mike and TrevorH for your help and suggestions

OK so I ended it up doing a fresh installation and I updated the kernel-devel package and re-installed Nvidia Drivers
I ran Blender from the shell and here is the error I get
$ ./blender
./blender: error while loading shared libraries: libGLU.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
and Houdini had the same error.

Thanks again
Ahmed

Code: Select all

# yum provides '*/libGLU.so.1'
...
mesa-libGLU-9.0.0-4.el7.i686 : Mesa libGLU library
Repo : base
Matched from:
Filename : /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1

mesa-libGLU-9.0.0-4.el7.x86_64 : Mesa libGLU library
Repo : base
Matched from:
Filename : /usr/lib64/libGLU.so.1
Check if those are installed with rpm -q mesa-libGLU and install the one that matches your app - .i686 if 32 bit, x86_64 if 64 bit.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
