Totem Movie Player, why elapsed/total time is not displayed in the statusbar as in Red Hat and Scientific Linux?
Totem Movie Player, why elapsed/total time is not displayed in the statusbar as in Red Hat and Scientific Linux?
Hello to all,
I spent some days trying to answer that question, searching CentOS wiki, CentOS fora, CentOS mailinglists, Google, etc.
I was surprised of this particular difference between CentOS vs Red Hat and Scientific Linux. The difference is there when you just open Totem Movie Player: the statusbar displays "Stopped 0:00 / 0:00" in Rad Hat and Scientific Linux, but displays just "Stopped" in CentOS.
It seems that the problem does not depend from installed plugings. I compared fresh CentOS/RedHat/SL 6.x 64bit installations after a "yum update".
I also compared via 'diff -r' the installation files/directories of Totem Movie Player in CentOS (after a 'get file list' from PackageKit), with the same files/directories in Scientific Linux, in search of some differences in source files. The result was that the only differences where in binary files.
What also surprised me very much is that nobody in the CentOS Fora seems interested in that question. How it is possible that no user of Totem Movie Player complains about such an important omission? How it is possible that I'm the sole person for whom knowing the elapsed/total time while playing any audio/video (mp3, mp4, ...) is a very, very useful information?
Am I wrong? Am I missing some obvious thing? Can you help me, please?
Thank you in advance.

Re: Totem Movie Player, why elapsed/total time is not displayed in the statusbar as in Red Hat and Scientific Linux?
Let's start with checking the output of rpm -qa 'totem*' from all the three. They should be the same. Please provide one such output here.
Re: Totem Movie Player, why elapsed/total time is not displayed in the statusbar as in Red Hat and Scientific Linux?
Thank you. Ok, now I'm ready with all 3 instances CentOS/RH/SL active.
CentOS:
SL:
RH:
CentOS:
Code: Select all
[guser@centos-6 ~]$ sudo rpm -qa 'totem*'

So, you are wrigth avij, the output is the same (after a sort).
Sorry for my delay, but I was not ready when you submitted your post. Now unfortunately it is too late for me (about 03:00 AM here in Italy).
I hope we can continue our interaction tomorrow. I think that you can give me some good tips.

Re: Totem Movie Player, why elapsed/total time is not displayed in the statusbar as in Red Hat and Scientific Linux?
I'm not using Totem myself but let's see .. When installing totem, these five dependencies got installed. Make sure you have the same ones:
When I launched Totem for the first time, it indeed displayed only "Stopped" in the status bar. But that's alright, I did not have a media file selected at that time. When I tried to open a mp3 file, Totem told me that I don't have the required MPEG-1 layer 3 decoder plugin installed.
Which plugin did you install to enable mp3 support, and where did you get it? I believe you are using some non-CentOS repositories as well.
Code: Select all
# rpm -q gsm gstreamer-plugins-bad-free libiptcdata libmpcdec libvpx | sort
gsm-1.0.13-4.el6.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-bad-free-0.10.19-5.el6_8.x86_64
libiptcdata-1.0.4-2.1.el6.x86_64
libmpcdec-1.2.6-6.1.el6.x86_64
libvpx-1.3.0-5.el6_5.x86_64

Re: Totem Movie Player, why elapsed/total time is not displayed in the statusbar as in Red Hat and Scientific Linux?
To play mp3, mp4, ... in a previous CentOS 6 configuration I installed nux-desktop and then I let Movie Player itself find missing plugins. But for the problem at hand, I made a new fresh CentOS 6 installation and I didn't install any plugins to not obfuscate the scenario. I'm using a wav file to investigate it.
Re: Totem Movie Player, why elapsed/total time is not displayed in the statusbar as in Red Hat and Scientific Linux?
Hm, odd.. I don't have access to RHEL so I can't test that, but there is indeed a difference between CentOS and SL in this regard. No idea why.
Re: Totem Movie Player, why elapsed/total time is not displayed in the statusbar as in Red Hat and Scientific Linux?
Indeed I observed the difference between an installation of CentOS and my Scientific Linux working environment. Afterwards, I used a temporary Red Hat instance of Google Cloud Platform to verify that the omission of elapsed/total time is a specific peculiarity of CentOS.

At this stage, I'd suggest filing a bug at https://bugs.centos.org/
