Cups 1.6.3: Raw Matrixprinters on Win10-Clients do not print

Post by Ralphetto » 2017/12/19 19:13:48

Hi there,

I am replacing our old CentOS 6.9 server (samba / cups 1.4.2). The new one (samba / CentOS 7.4 with cups 1.6.3) will have the same printers as the old one. All printers are connected to the network via hardware printservers (centronics <-> network).

The printers will be used by our Windows 10 clients.

There are a few laser printers that work fine. But there are two dot matrix printers (Lexmark 2390plus and NEC Pinwriter P30) that just don't print.

These matrix printers are configured with lpadmin:
lpadmin –p Printer1 –D 'Lexmark 2390plus' –v socket://192.168.0.xxx:9100 –E
lpadmin –p Printer2 –D 'NEC Pinwriter P30' –v socket://192.168.0.xxx:9101 –E

The printers are shown as "Local Raw Printer" as Make and Model in CUPS. That's fine, because I will use them from Windows with an according driver installed at the client computers.

What's confusing: I am able to print the Windows Test Page.
But any other print job will not be printed. The jobs appear in the cups gui with state "completed" but there is nothing on paper :?

That means (as I would assume) that cups received the print job ok but the printer just doesn't print. The local windows-driver can't cause the problem - connected to the old server these printers run just fine with the same win-drivers.

The cups error_log does not show anything...

My questions are:
What is the difference between the clients windows test page (it's printed) and a print job from e.g. the clients windows editor (not printed)?
What has changed from cups 1.4.2 to 1.6.3 that would cause these problems?
What can I do to enable printing and finally get rid of the old server?

I am very sorry to push this...

I still have this odd problem and I still have no idea what to do.

If anybody has any comments or hints - I would love to hear them!

Ralph
