[RESOLVED] system (Centos 7) crashes during update.

Post by edith75 » 2018/03/13 10:42:56

Hello
I am running Centos 7 on my Dell Precision T 7400.

I had problem with the kernel (I could not uptdate after the 3.10.0-327.28.2.el7.x86.64) but I still could work .

But yesterday, I tried to update via a graphical application (I can't remember the name, but it was something like "Mise à jour" (in french)) in which I unselected everything related to "kernel" (at least I thought so) There were about 844 apps to uptate.

Suddenly, about half way, the system told me "oups, there was an error and the system can not recover, try to reboot" (I don't remember exactly the words, but it was something like this).

But then, I could never reboot.
I saw quite a few "Started" and "starting" status, but it stopped in the middle (not always at the same place) and I could never go on.
I also tried the "centos rescue" kernel but I never suceeded.

Another strange point : About 2 months ago, I had to move from my office to another room. Before I moved, I was working with 2 screens with a Nvidia card. Since I moved, only one of them worked (I thought, that maybe one graphic card was dead) but when I tried the Centos rescue kernel, the 2 of them suddenly worked ....

Has someone any idea of what could be going on.

If I could escape a new system installation, I would be glad since I didn"'t make a backup for the last month ....

thank you

Edit the kernel command line by pressing 'e' when you see the list of kernels. Remove rhgb quiet from the kernel command line and boot like that. What do you see now?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

thanks for your help
I supressed the "rhgb quiet " so it said a lot of things, but stopped at "Started GNOME display manager"

So that points to a problem with your display drivers. Have you ever installed the nvidia proprietary drivers using a .run file downloaded from them? If you have then you either need to reinstall that each and every time there is a new kernel or you need to uninstall that (it has an uninstall option that can be passed to the .run file) and then install the ELRepo third party yum repo and install their version of the same drivers. They have an nvidia-detect package, install that and run it and it will tell you which of their kmod-nvidia packages your card requires, then yum install that.

If you haven't installed the nvidia proprietary drivers then use pastebin.centos.org to upload a copy of your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and then post the link here.

I installed the driver using the .run
The problem, is that I can't access to my account at all. I am stacked during the restarting process.

When it stops like that it should a) be accessible via ssh over the network and b) on one of the other virtual terminals you can reach by hitting ctrl-alt-F2 (F3 etc).

thanks.

SSH is broken (I have no idea why) but I could access with ctrl-alt-F2
And I reinstalled nvidia as you said (with yum) and it works.
thank you very much.
