Issues in installing CentOS on HP Omen15

Post by aditya_natoo » 2019/08/22 12:01:58

Hi,

I am from India and I have purchased a Omen - 15-dc0084tx last year. It is an i7 8th Gen, with Win 10 Home OS installed on 128GB NVME SSD, 1 TB HDD, 4gb nvidia graphics card and 16GB RAM. Recently I have upgraded the SSD to 500GB Crucial NVME SSD to make room for additional OS.

I am trying to install on Dual Boot Centos 7.5 I have prepared a Live USB Stick with CentOS using Fedora Live USB Creator. But when I am trying to install the OS (after disabling secure-boot and/or enabling legacy mode in the bios) the installation is not completing. After the initial splash screen of CentOs 7, its stuck on long series of kernel panics. The "Caps Lock" LED keeps flashing and I have to stop the installation using power button on the laptop.

I can share screenshots of the errors which are being displayed. I have been playing around with Linux for last few years and earlier I had successfully installed Scientific Linux 6.5 on dual boot with Win 7 on a Toshiba Laptop( i7 3rd Gen, 16GB Ram, 2GB Video Memory, 1 TB HDD). Unfortunately that laptop is on its last legs hence the new purchase.

Can somebody help as I had purchased this laptop to primarily run a Linux OS? I am open to removing the Win 10 completely provided somebody has successfully installed CentOS on a similar laptop.

Thanks in advance
Aditya

Don't use 7.5 when 7.6 is available. If you wait another few days/weeks then 7.7 will be out and you can try that instead.

CentOS 7 supports UEFI and secure boot out of the box, there is no need to disable it if you would prefer to use it.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

HP Omen 15 was released somewhere around august 2018, this is after the release of CentOS 7.5 (May 2018). So the hardware may not be supported in 7.5. Try the 7.6 version (dec 2018) or the soon to be released 7.7.

Use UEFI mode. Keep secure boot enabled.
