Old Intel support

Post by angelosn » 2019/09/25 08:45:37

Hello,
At my job we have an old server which runs windows 2003 SBS and it 's gonna be free to play with!
From speccy I have this info

Code: Select all

CPU
		Intel Xeon
			Cores	1
			Threads	2
			Name	Intel Xeon
			Code Name	Irwindale
			Package	Socket 604 mPGA
			Technology	90nm
			Specification	Intel Xeon CPU 2.80GHz
			Family	F
			Extended Family	F
			Model	4
			Extended Model	4
			Stepping	A
			Revision	R0
			Instructions	MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, Intel 64
			Virtualization	Not supported
			Hyperthreading	Supported, Enabled
			Bus Speed	200.0 MHz
			Rated Bus Speed	800.1 MHz
			Stock Core Speed	2800 MHz
			Stock Bus Speed	200 MHz
				Caches
L1 Data Cache Size	16 KBytes
					L1 trace cache	12 Kµops
L2 Unified Cache Size	2048 KBytes
				Cores
						Core 0
							Core Speed	2800.3 MHz
							Multiplier	x 14.0
							Bus Speed	200.0 MHz
							Rated Bus Speed	800.1 MHz
							Threads	APIC ID: 0, 1
		Intel Xeon

So it should be this one https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en ... z-fsb.html

Will this support Centos 7? I am confused about

Code: Select all

Physical Address Extensions 32-bit

Instruction Set 64-bit
I know that is pretty old so I am wondering is it even worth try to burn a dvd?
The only documentetion I could find was https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/intel but I do not see my CPU

Thank you in advance

burn a 'live' disc, boot from it, and try it out.

?

That 's what I will probably do if there is no answer till the server is free. Now it is up and running so I can not try it!

Honestly I'm not sure it's worth the effort. That cpu is one of the early Intel Xeon's based on Pentium 4's and it's incredibly power hungry and not very efficient. It also benchmarks about the same speed as a low end Atom! See https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cp ... Hz&id=1317 and also if you look, that gets outperformed by a factor of 2 by an Intel Atom x5-e3930 which has a TDP of 6.5W vs the TDP of 103W for the ancient Xeon.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
Info for USB installs on http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey
CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I see. It will be better if I load my Raspberry than this! :D Thanks for replying! I will try just for scientific reasons! :D

If you double check the listing you will see Intel 64 = Yes and Instruction Set = 64 bit. This kind of system will probably accept CentOS. I recommend trying CentOS 8 first and seeing if that works out since it is a new install. If not you can always go back to CentOS 7.

Yes an Atom will probably run faster and at lower heat. The catch to it though is it will cost ~100 USD for a new system that can not be modified. Sounds like the OP just wants to see how they can get new life off of old iron.
