Radeon HD 6490M driver

Post by paul22 » 2011/08/17 21:48:14

Hello, I just got an HP Pavilion dv6t laptop, installed centOS6, and it looks like I am having a display driver issue.

The max display resolution I got after installation was 1024x768 (should go up to 1920x1080), so I installed kmod-fglrx from elrepo and upon restart I get a blank screen...

Server is up, and everything seems to be normal, but no "visuals" what so ever...

Uninstalling the kmod-fglrx and restarting brings the server to the previous state: screen is up but with resolution of 1024... installing it back gives me the blank black screen again...

Please help! - I have no idea what to do next... :(

Thanks a lot in advance!
Paul

NedSlider, thank you very much for your reply, the log (at the end of it) says:

Please consult the Red Hat, Inc. support
at https://www.redhat.com/apps/support/
for help.
Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.

This is far beyond my understanding of what is going on or how to fix it, so any advice is really appreciated.

If there is no way to fix it, - is there a way to add a new resolution setting so everything would not be so stretched out on screen? - I dont have /etc/x11/xorg.conf file...

Any help is really appreciated.

Thanks
Paul

Did you try uninstalling kmod-fgrlx and installing from the ATI driver installer?

TrevorH, thank you very much for your reply!

Yes I actually started by installing the ati driver, and when that did not work, I tried kmod-fgrlx...

I had exactly the same results with both (ati and kmod-fgrlx)

Is there anything else I could try?

Thanks again.

I think you've found a bug in their driver. I see from the log that you posted that you seem to have both an ATI and an Intel video card in that machine - at least I guess that's what the lines about loading module Intel mean.

I do have 2 video cards, I guess another one is used for the external connection, - not really sure about it, and I am not sure if it is a bug in the driver or something else (everything works out of the box with Fedora)...

My biggest problem is that with 1280x1024 resolution option, everything is so stretched that I really can not show anything to anyone - a square becomes a rectangular! - same with 1024x768

Is there a way to just add a resolution setting? or adjust the numbering on the existing one?

Thanks

Paul

I'm not certain if you've figured this out yet or not, but in order for your setup to work properly and for you to be able to get past the resolution issues with your card, you will most likely have to move to the El6 6.1 kernel 2.6.32-131.17.1.el6.x86_64. I fought with this for several hours before realizing the problem was lack of kernel support. I used SL6, another EL6 distro as my base, this updated the kernel, and several other packages, and following I was able to properly set the screen-resolution and dual monitor setup using System Settings in KDE. This also helped resolve an RT2780 issue I was experiencing. Just a suggestion, use a VM and see how it goes for you. - only takes 20 minutes to setup a Vbox.
