CentOS 6 Cd Tray keeps opening

Post by jwalpole » 2012/01/22 21:37:23

Okay I am running
kernel: 2.6.32-131.21.1.el6.i686
Distro: CentOS release 6.1 (Final)

My issue is that my cd tray keeps opening usually at random. There are times I can push the tray closed not controlled by gears), then it will open in 30 seconds, immediatley after, etc.

Anyone have any idea why? I have googled this and all the sites come back for xp, xbox, dell, etc. and mention a virus.

Edited:

I have also checked all hardware connections, fstab for erroneous items

Could someone have obtained access to your system and be playing a practical joke?

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

New one on me. Are you running a GUI desktop? Does it matter if there's a disk in the tray? What about a mounted disk?

Edit: I like Trevor's question too. :-)

I have updated my kernel to 2.6.32-220.2.1.el6.i686 just on the outside chance it was something funky.

@TrevorH I did think of that but this is off the network as a development server. But others have access to the server. If it were a joke what should I be looking for?

Well,

updated kernel and rebooted still happened. I then shut down totally and turned on and the cd tray opened once the box was up and I could get to the desktop login prompt???

@pschaff I have tried with out the gui desktop and with, same result. This is with no cd in tray. Really quite annoying. I would like to try and solve the problem by figuring this out and not reinstalling. To me that is just avoiding the problem. Then when it happens again you still don't know what caused it or how to fix it. :)
I have tried everything I could think of and now am turning to those who may have more experience than I on CentOS.

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The other thing I just tried was putting a cd into the cd tray. I closed it and it made no difference. It ejected after about 30 seconds.
-_- (smh)
to me it sounds like either a bad cd tray or something got installed that shouldn't have.
