[SOLVED] AR8151 ethernet card won't install

Post by maul0r » 2012/02/15 10:26:35

Good Morning People,

first of, i do have some limited linux experience, however I am still a newbie. This is the first time using CentOs but due to the program I need to run, I really do need to use CentOS. I am using an Alienware M14x. The Installation went fine, however, the Ethernet Card as well as my Video driver do not work. My first Objective is to get Ethernet up and running.

I have spend all of yesterday trying to get it to work, I would like to tell you what I have been doing:

lspci-nn returns the following information when it comes to my Ethernet:
07:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR8151 v2.0 Gigabit Ethernet [1969:1083] (rev c0)
I have tried downloading the kmod-atl1e module, however this doens't support my ethernet card.

I have also tried using this tutorial (and patch) however, even after doing some changes to that make file, it won't make the file for me, rendering it useless to me.
Patch Tutorial Fedora

This link will provide you with the information produced by the getinfo script:

Pastebin GetInfo

Please Help me!

Regards,

[SOLVED] AR8151 ethernet card won't install

Post by pschaff » 2012/02/15 11:26:33

Welcome to the CentOS fora, and congratulations on being one of the select few to do the recommended reading before posting. :-)

According to the ELRepo DeviceIDs page the kmod-atl1e driver should work. Following Fedora tutorials recommending Source Installs is highly discouraged. No telling what that may have done to your system, but there is no eth0 in your script output. Is the wireless working? Try re-installing the kmod driver and rebooting.

After using the rpm and restarting eth0 still wasn't created. So I manually loaded it:
[root@alienware cax]# modprobe atl1e
[root@alienware cax]# dmesg | grep Atheros
Atheros(R) AR8121/AR8113/AR8114/AR8131/AR8132/AR8152 PCI-E Ethernet Network Driver - version 1.0.1.9 Copyright (c) 2007 - 2009 Atheros Corporation.
This shows (I think) that the AR8151 is not supported, however, AR8152 is.

Yes I thought so, however I haven't really done much yet. I have installed those packages in order for me to be able to compile something. But the makescript didn't work for me, so I am guessing I haven't really changed much in the system yet.

Yes there is no eth0 in my system, which is the problem I am trying to solve :)

My wlan0 and pan0 connections have worked from start and still do.

I have rpm'd it serveral times - no change.

Thanks for the prompt reply :)

What do you mean by restarted. Are you managing the network with the new default (thanks to TUV) tool NetworkManager?

So I manually loaded it:
[root@alienware cax]# modprobe atl1e
[root@alienware cax]# dmesg | grep Atheros
Atheros(R) AR8121/AR8113/AR8114/AR8131/AR8132/AR8152 PCI-E Ethernet Network Driver - version 1.0.1.9 Copyright (c) 2007 - 2009 Atheros Corporation.
Seems to have modprobed fine.

Perhaps read: CentOS-6 FAQ #2. Why does my Ethernet not work unless I log in and explicitly enable it?

With restarted I meant init 6 and service network restart. I can't use any kind of network manager, because i do not have a physical connection.

Yes and No! The atl1e will show up, but it remains unused. I am guessing this is due to the fact that Atheros states in dmesg that it does support AR8152 but not AR8151, just like I posted above.

The Problem is, i do not have an ethernet connection (ethX)
[cax@alienware network-scripts]$ ifconfig eth0
eth0: error fetching interface information: Device not found
[cax@alienware network-scripts]$ ls -a /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
. ifdown-ippp ifdown-tunnel ifup-isdn ifup-tunnel
.. ifdown-ipv6 ifup ifup-plip ifup-wireless
ifcfg-lo ifdown-isdn ifup-aliases ifup-plusb init.ipv6-global
ifcfg-wlan0 ifdown-post ifup-bnep ifup-post net.hotplug
ifdown ifdown-ppp ifup-eth ifup-ppp network-functions
ifdown-bnep ifdown-routes ifup-ippp ifup-routes network-functions-ipv6
ifdown-eth ifdown-sit ifup-ipv6 ifup-sit
Do you see my problem? I have been told (by a linux guru) that if that atl1e module had worked the way it is supposed to work, after restarting the system the interface eth0 would have been created. But I guess that drive just won't work for me.
[root@alienware Downloads]# lsmod | grep atl
atl1e 36418 0
Maybe there is a generic driver? I recall years ago Realtek used to have a generic driver that would work with pretty much any network card.

Or can I compile a kmod to make it do what I want it to do?

Maybe I am not doing a good enough job in explaining?

You mean you don't have a GUI? There are command-line NM tools - nm-tool nmcli nm-online

I don't read it that way, and a google on AR8152 AR8151 linux seems to give pretty conclusive evidence that the driver should work for both.

I apologize for causing you so much work!

I reinstalled my OS today to rule out any compile mess ups I might have caused. This time I installed atl1e using yum after adding the elrepo information to yum.

I rebooted and it worked THANK YOU!

I may have to come back to get help with my video card, but for now I will try by myself. Thank you so much!

You are welcome. Apparently another testimonial against source installs. Thanks for reporting back. Marking this thread [SOLVED] for posterity.

maulOr or pschaff...

What were the exact commands that you entered to resolve this issue. I'm having the same problem, I have the same hardware device. Attempting to load a minimal install on CentOS, 6.2. No experience with CentOS, experience with basic Unix administration.

ifconfig eth0 shows Device not found.
ifcfg-eth0 is not made.

How do you do this:

"

Your help would be much appreciated!

vallasd - Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

After reading those links you should realize why you should not hijack threads as you have done. It's not clear if you have solved your own problem with ELRepo. If not please start a new Topic for your issue to get the attention you need, providing a link to this one if required for context.
