I was talking to my friend on Google Talk last night (via Pidgin), and he could hear everything I was saying, but I was unable to hear him. So, my sound's not working. When I open Juk I get the error, "The audio playback device HDA Intel (ALC269 Analog) does not work. Falling back to default." I've installed kmod-alsa, but not sure if there are any modules I need to load. YouTube videos play, but I hear nothing. However, doing "aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav " from terminal (within Gnome) I do hear "Front Center" spoken. In alsamixer I see that everything is turned up and nothing muted, same goes for gnome-alsamixer. If it's any help, I installed Gnome and KDE when installing CentOS--I normally only install Gnome.

No sound in gnome, but working in terminal.
Re: No sound in gnome, but working in terminal.
Odd. I have solved this myself just now. For anyone's interest, I think this may have been what fixed it:
I opened RythymBox Music Player and tried to play an mp3, but received an error about not having the proper Gstreamer plugin installed. I was given the option to allow it to be installed, which I did. It then installed Lame, Gstreamer, and some other stuff. After all of the codecs were installed, my sound worked. So, if you're having this issue, I suggest ensuring all codecs are installed, because it seems that possibly codecs have been deprecated from install in 6.2 (I didn't have this problem after installing CentOS 5.x).

Thank you! I was trying to figure out how to mark it as [SOLVED] myself, but couldn't. I do have one question, which may interest other people (I know it's what I was searching for in all of this): After installing kmod-alsa and doing a restart, an 'lsmod | grep alsa' shows nothing. I am wondering, should modules have loaded at all? I installed the package from ElRepo, and after still not having sound I was curious if there were other steps to take after installing the package. Thanks for any answers!
EDIT: Actually, I'd really like to know how I fixed it, because it's not working again. I just got home, booted up, and for some reason the sound is gone again. Now it does not play in console either. Personally, I think the drivers may be wrong, but not really sure.

Re: [un-SOLVED] No sound in gnome, but working in terminal.
Removed [SOLVED] from the head of the thread. :-(
There is no kernel module named alsa. Your hardware is:
00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:293e] (rev 03)
So:
$ grep -i 8086 /lib/modules/*/modules.alias | grep -i 293e
/lib/modules/2.6.32-220.4.1.el6.x86_64/modules.alias:alias pci:v00008086d0000293Esv*sd*bc*sc*i* snd_hda_intel
/lib/modules/2.6.32-220.4.2.el6.x86_64/modules.alias:alias pci:v00008086d0000293Esv*sd*bc*sc*i* snd_hda_intel
/lib/modules/2.6.32-220.7.1.el6.x86_64/modules.alias:alias pci:v00008086d0000293Esv*sd*bc*sc*i* snd_hda_intel
$ rpm -ql kmod-alsa | grep intel
/lib/modules/2.6.32-220.el6.x86_64/extra/alsa/snd-hda-codec-intelhdmi.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.32-220.el6.x86_64/extra/alsa/snd-hda-intel.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.32-220.el6.x86_64/extra/alsa/snd-intel8x0.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.32-220.el6.x86_64/extra/alsa/snd-intel8x0m.ko
What does
lsmod | grep intel
show?
If you want to fall back to the standard kernel driver just
yum remove kmod-alsa
You could also try an earlier version per ELRepo bug #259.

No sound in gnome, but working in terminal.
yumpi, is pulseaudio running when you start GNOME?
If not, then try $ pulseaudio --start

Re: [SOLVED] No sound in gnome, but working in terminal.
I just want to update this thread for anyone else who is searching for this question. My problem is fixed, but I do not know what fixed it. The only thing I can possibly think of that I did was change from "default" to my Intel audio device in alsa-mixer. I wish--for others who are experiencing this issue--that I could say more, but it seemed to magically fix itself and has been working for days now.
