Sporadic network timeouts in CentOS 6.2 Dell R710

Post by panpan » 2012/01/23 06:06:23

Hi guys,
we recently bought 2 servers dell rf10 in my enterprise. I installed centos 6.2 minimal and minimal desktop in both of them but I have sporadic time outs. The servers have the latest updates from the official centos repositories, and after I updated them from the internet I connected them to my internal network in which I haven't internet. The exact problem is that when I install the servers and set the network interface static I can ping and ssh the servers from outside. After in variable time I can't ping or ssh from outside. If from server I ping the gateway is like magic and the interface is up. Then I can ping from any client in the network the server.
Please I have lost 2 weeks searching with this problem with no luck and this post (https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=34641) didn't help me.

Thanks in advance

Sporadic network timeouts in CentOS 6.2 Dell R710

Post by TrevorH » 2012/01/23 09:24:29

You have both "NetworkManager" and "network" enabled and running and you seem to have lost your DNS server entries from /etc/resolv.conf. It's a good idea to pick one of NetworkManager or network and disable the other (most people, especially with servers, tend to choose to use network and not NM). Once you've turned off NM, you probably need to manually fix /etc/resolv.conf to contain valid nameserver lines.

With no name servers any attempt to ssh to the machines will hang for about 30 seconds or so as it tries to reverse lookup the IP address that you're coming from.

Thanks for reply,
I tryied both wich means
1st I disabled NM and rebooted the server but stiil the problem exists
2nd I disabled network and rebooted the server but also still the problem exists
As about the DNS for now I don't use them because I use only IP : ping x.x.x.x or ssh x.x.x.x

Thanks
Any help is welcome

You obviously need one of NetworkManager or network enabled.

The default sshd configuration is to perform reverse lookups on the IP addresses of anyone connecting to it. With a misconfigured set of nameservers this will hang until it times out. You can disable it by using UseDNS no in /etc/ssh/sshd_config.

Otherwise I'm not entirely sure of the problem that you are seeing so perhaps you can try to explain it again in different words? Are you saying that after some period of time, you are unable to ssh into the machine but that a ping from the machine itself to the default gateway fixes this and brings it back up with no other intervention? If so then I'd be tempted to look at the possibility that you have duplicate IP addresses inside your network as the ping will let the gateway arp cache know that it's there.

I plugged the R710 to another switch and now is working for 4 hours with non stop. I 'll speak with network department to see what is going on because I can not log in into to the switch. I'll let you now. Thanks again.

Well, TrevorH thanks for your help, I have some results,
I logged in to the switch, which is Alcatel 6250, with network administrator, and we saw that the mobile on all ports that is enabled, when I plugged in the cable on port 23 the switch changes the vlan on port 23 from vlan 1 to VLAN 80. When I have the problem timeouts when I see in which vlan is the port on the switch (port 23) I see that the port does not belong to VLAN 80 that transfered before but only to default 1. So we changed the port settings (port 23) to not mobile and default to 80. Now it seemes that is working. I;ll post if no network timeouts tommorow, It is very strange because on this switch are working all of our servers and about 50 clients with no problem. Also 1 week before the post I also changed the network card a tplink with the sames problems. I don't know where is the problem
This is the output of the network interface with the command ethtool (I don't know if I have to change some parameters to the card) :
[root@localhost ~]# ethtool em1
Settings for em1:
Supported ports: [ TP ]

Sounds like a firmware bug on the network switch to me. If a port magically forgets which VLAN it belongs to then I don't think that the operating system on the other end of the cable can affect that.

Perhaps the switch needs upgrade, as you said , because I also upgraded the firmware and the drivers from the dell official site with no lack before posting this thread
I also don't know if there is a param on the net interface for vlans or mobile ethernets on switch.

Thanks for your help
