[SOLVED] Network-Manager VPN Problem

Post by mrMash » 2012/02/16 20:39:27

Hello everyone,

this is my first post and i'm not a native english speaker. I hope I can make my troubles clear, and do not reopen solved issues.

I'm using CentOS 6.2 with centos plus kernel and want to establish a VPN connection using network-manager. I have installed openvpn and pptp plugin, but cant get it running. The first time I configured openvpn and clicked on "anwenden" (english: accept?) a message occured telling me that there is a problem with writing something somewhere. The same happened when tying it with pptp plugin. Root privileges have been granted.

Here's the message: >> Saving connection failed: (0) Can't write connection type 'vpn' <<

Now if I want to configure VPN again, I can input all settings, but the button to accept these settings is not clickable anymore! Googled a lot but found nothing useful.

Can someone help me get my VPN up an running?

Greetings,
mrMash

[SOLVED] Network-Manager VPN Problem

Post by pschaff » 2012/02/17 16:04:04

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

There was (and may still be) a bug in the VPN plugin that required a reboot before it would work. See if it works after a reboot. If not, then please provide more information about your system by running "./getinfo.sh" and showing us the output file.

Hi

After reboot, pptp connection can be set up but wouldn't connect to vpn because 'vpn service could not be started' (german error message translated). Openvpn did not change, I still can not click to accept my settings.

Heres my getinfo output, many thanks for your effort.

Re: Network-Manager VPN Problem

You have a dangerous mix of repos but do have yum-plugin-priorities installed and some priorities set. No priorities are set for enabled repo EPEL so it will default to 99. Remi (which replaces core packages) is installed but disabled. If it were enabled the default priority of 99 would prevent its effective use. You have RPMforge enabled at priority 10 and RPMforge Extras (which replaces core packages) nominally enabled, but the priority of 11 makes it effectively disabled so no core packages will be replaced by it. CentOSplus is enabled at priority 1 so it will and apparently has replaced core packages. Any particular reason for using it, and the plus kernel?

I don't understand the route information - specifically the 85.17.173.156 with gateway 10.201.0.1 and mask 255.255.255.255. Can you explain what that is about? There is no 169.254.0.0 link-local address that would normally be present, and no tun0 for a VPN connection. Is networking working without the VPN?

Are you trying to create a VPN server or connect to an existing VPN? What does
rpm -qa | grep vpn
show?

Thats because i had to install them in order to get some multimedia codecs and newest firefox/thunderbird etc. Unfortunately i found no explanation of how to get the right mix of repos and priorities for normal home-user desktop software like the mentioned. Some advanced guy (i think it was in this forum) even said, that priorities are dangerous per se, which confused me even more.

Thought it would provide some nice extra features like the codecs mentioned above. Should I disable it?

Since I'm living in a student residential home, i have to set a fixed IP, and 10.201.0.1 is my gateway and dns server. I simply modified "auto eth0" in network-manager gui. I Also disabled ipv6, just to mention it. 85.17.173.156 would be my external IP at that time i think.

normal networking is up and running without any problems.

I want to connect to a commercial vpn service to get some more privacy.

Heres the output, I added the output for pptp since I also installed these packages by a way of trial:
[root@localhost ~]# rpm -qa | grep vpn
stonevpn-0.4.12-1.el6.noarch
openvpn-auth-ldap-2.0.3-6.el6.i686
openvpn-2.2.0-3.el6.rf.i686

pptp-1.7.2-8.1.el6.i686

Thats because i had to install them in order to get some multimedia codecs and newest firefox/thunderbird etc. Unfortunately i found no explanation of how to get the right mix of repos and priorities for normal home-user desktop software like the mentioned. Some advanced guy (i think it was in this forum) even said, that priorities are dangerous per se, which confused me even more.
I would not call it dangerous per se but it can be complex and confusing to set up correctly. The apparent confusion about RPMforge Extras and Remi repos that I pointed out in my last post illustrates the point. I have yet to find a case where I needed [rpmforge-extras], but I do use some of Dag's multimedia and other packages. You don't need Remi unless setting up a web or other server that requires later package versions than CentOS provides.

Thought it would provide some nice extra features like the codecs mentioned above. Should I disable it?
No codecs or other multimedia packages are provided in CentOSplus. It provides replacements for core packages, primarily for server use. The kernel has some additional drivers not in the distro kernel, but should only be used if those are required, and you are sure you know what you are doing. I would recommend disabling [centosplus], getting rid of the plus kernel, and running the standard kernel, unless you have a need for the plus capabilities. The procedure to do that would be something like:
1. As root: Change "enabled=1" to "enabled-0" for [centosplus]
2. Reboot to kernel-2.6.32-220.4.1.el6
3. As root:
yum remove kernel-2.6.32-220.4.2.el6.centos.plus
yum install kernel-2.6.32-220.4.2.el6
4. Reboot to kernel-2.6.32-220.4.2.el6

I'm frankly not sure what to do about kernel-firmware-2.6.32-220.4.2.el6.centos.plus.noarch but I think leaving it would be OK. Perhaps toracat or AlanBartlett will comment on that.

Still seems strange to me, but I guess "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." applies.

I want to connect to a commercial vpn service to get some more privacy.

Heres the output, I added the output for pptp since I also installed these packages by a way of trial: ...

Now we get to the heart of the matter. It looks like you have been trying to use packages for a VPN server and not a client. On my VPN clients for a Cisco server I have:
$ rpm -qa \*vpn\* \*pptp\*
vpnc-0.5.3-4.el6.i686
NetworkManager-vpnc-0.8.0-1.git20100411.el6.i686
Perhaps you could provide a link to the requirements of the provider you are trying to use.

Having looked around to make sure that no one else is watching, I'll say that judicious use of the --nodeps flag to the rpm command, followed by a yum install will be appropriate --
rpm -e --nodeps kernel-firmware-2.6.32-220.4.2.el6.centos.plus.noarch
yum install kernel-firmware
Did I hear the sound of a big hammer in use? :-) I guess sometimes that's the only tool to get the job done.

How else can we ensure that toracat is awake? (Rhetorical question.) :-P

I have no clue what that does, and removing the packages with
yum remove kernel*plus*
and afterwards installing kernel and firmware worked perfectly. you probably want to rip out some hair, now would be the right time ;)

Okay so now I switched to normal kernel and installed vpnc and NetworkManager-vpnc as well as pptp client.
# rpm -qa \*vpn\* \*pptp\*
pptp-1.7.2-8.1.el6.i686
vpnc-0.5.3-4.el6.i686
NetworkManager-vpnc-0.8.0-1.git20100411.el6.i686
NetworkManager-pptp-0.8.0-1.git20100411.el6.i686
but after successfully configuring vpn via pptp another message tells me that there are no valid vpn secrets available (translated).
vpnc seems not to work for me since there are more and and not matching settings to enter. I simply have a username and password.

The Link to my vpn provider is: http://wwws.linkideo.com/howto
Sadly there is no specification of requirements in detail.

Should I post the new getinfo output?
