How to config external SMTP for mail command

Hi Experts

I want to use mail command for Nagios to send Nagios notification.

How and where do I configure the SMTP server. I tried to put set smtp=mysmtpserver in mail.rc file. but it does not work.

Can I put my account password to mail.rc too? What's the syntax?

Is there a log file for mail command? I checked the Man Mail it does not provide help for config SMTP.
