Post by Art11 » 2012/03/03 16:20:15

Hi,
I cannot find reasonable explanations on the web on how to install latest Forefox on CentOS 5.7 32 and 64 bit
Can guru's help please?
Is there a difference in installation on CentOS 5 and 6 please?

The same applies to Google Chrome and IE...
Thank you.

Yes.
CentOS-6.2 now has firefox-10.0.1-1.el6.centos and 5.8 will come with firefox-10.0.1-1.el5.centos.

There is a Wiki page Google Yum Repository Examples.

The only way to install IE is with Wine and it will likely never run the latest. Your best bet for a relatively painless, albeit not free, experience is probably CodeWeavers Crossover.

How to replace old version and shortcuts with a new one please? What are the steps please?
Yum install firefox does not work.

Anybody can give reaonable answer please? No geecky and smart stuff please, but simple steps for IDIOTS please.
Thanks, Art.

As Phil mentioned, CentOS 5.8 (its updates) comes with Firefox 10. If you can wait a bit longer, running 'yum update' will install this latest version.

If you do not want to wait but rather wish to install the stuff from Mozilla, it can be done, too. Assuming you have downloaded the .tar.bz2 file, untar+unzip it in a directory (I would do it as me, not root).

tar xvjf

That will create a subdirectory named 'firefox'. cd to it and you will find a file 'firefox'. Just run it.

You can leave the CentOS-installed firefox. Or you can remove it by a 'yum remove firefox' command if you like.

Art11, for long term maintenance and security I recommend that you don't use the downloaded version but rather stick with the Redhat supplied version. It'll be included in CentOS 5.8 which is in what sounds like the late stages of QA and should be released soon. A simple yum update after that date will bring you firefox 10 and a regular yum update after that will keep it up to date.

First, thank you very much to all who tried to help.
I'm still not clear how to use new Firefox and update shortcuts. If I click on the Firefix icon it still opens old version of FFox.

As far as I know CentOS does not support upgrades. To use new vesrion of CentOS I need clean install. But I have Oracle installed on CentOS 5.6 and it is stable. Installing Oracle on Linux is PAIN, especially latest version. This is why I'd rather stick to older version of CentOS.

To CentOS geeks...
Why CentOS does not support upgrades and why ver. 5.6 comes with such old version of Ffox? And why it is not possible to upgrade/install Ffox using software installer?

Thank you.
Art.

CentOS 5.8 will be an upgrade and you'll get there just by running `yum update` as root.
