Flash install Centos5.2 x64

Post by invasionbond » 2009/02/24 19:20:45

I have been trying to get flash working with firefox 3.0.6 (or any browser really) on my centros 5.2 x64 system. I have never had flash working on this machine. I noticed the issue back in firefox 3.0.0 and ignored it because I never needed flash. Now I need to view a site with flash so I want to get this working. What happens is that every time I got to a page with flash it tell me to get the plug in.

I have installed the plug in via adobes site. but running about:plugins in firefox says "No plugins are installed". If I try to install the plugin again it says that its already installed.

if I run locate libflashplayer.so in my terminal I get:
/usr/lib/flash-plugin/libflashplayer.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
/usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so
/usr/lib64/firefox-3.0.6/plugins/libflashplayer.so

The top two were what it showed after I installed the plug in. When It didn't work I copied it to the 'usr/lib64/firefox-3.0.6/plugins/' and '/usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so' thinking it might help which it didn't. I also copied it to 'usr/lib/firefox-3.0.6/plugins/' but have since removed it because that didn't work either.

I have also run 'yum update' just to be sure everything is current.

Any Ideas?

Please read the wiki:

Also try the search button at the top of this page.
64bit flash has been discussed several times.

I did read that it just explains how to install thing with yum which I know how to do. The other Threads is where to look for help and how to post a question. Which I believe I did correctly.

If i search yum for flash it says its installed. So I know its in there some how.

I did also search for "flash firefox" and "flash 64bit" before I posted and didn't see anything that I could use. All the posts were people that had installed but had other issues or for older versions of flash.

I know adobe has a version of flash 64 for Linux that works with firebox. That's what I wanted to get working since according to other posts others have it working fine.

Find the install dir, usually /usr/lib/flash-plugin

Read the README file.

Run the setup script

Sigh, Ned, I thought you read my posts religiously.

Don't do what he said. (This may be the one time in my life when I can say that about advice from Ned with any confidence). :)

Do this.

Go to labs.adobe.com and get the latest flash 10 64 bit plugin. No, this is not officially documented anywhere (I'm not sure if flash in CentOS is either.)

It's marked alpha but it works, probably better than the non-alpha 32 bit.

Download the tarball.

tar zxvf libflashplugin-whatever.tar.gz

It will leave you a file called libflashplayer.so

Stop firefox.

cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins

(Note that it's lib64, not lib)

As root or with root privilege, edit /etc/sysconf/nspluginwrapper

Find the line saying export IGNORE_WRAP="whatever*:whatever*:" (assuming there's anything in there. If there is, put another : at the end and put in libflash* before the final quote.

Start Mozilla

Try something with flash. I used to give a link to a Star Trek version of the Death of Spock with Monty Python being dubbed in, but not everyone shares my sense of humor.

Ah, I missed the 64-bit reference (x64 ?? - x86, or x86_64)

Scott - maybe we could get this written up as a TipsAndTricks on the Wiki?

Heh, I was waiting for Toracat to suggest that.

I decided against that for a few reasons. One, Adobe is calling it alpha, and I figured that various folks on the docs list would have an issue with that. Also, of course, the fact that it's from outside the approved repos. Lastly, I would think that it will be outdated very shortly, when Adobe puts it out.
(Of course, I thought that a month ago as well) :-D

What I may do is put up a little page on my site about it, that can be removed when Adobe puts it into production and the various distributions start carrying it. At that point, I would guess that Dag will make one. Leigh123 on Fedora forums already created an rpm for Fedora that will even put the libflashplayer.so in the correct directory for you.
