Due to the age of my laptop centos 5 is the newest version I can use.
Now for some time I do have some problems with the firefox version 3.x, which is available in the repos.
Newer versions of firefox are not supported and the news found at the web, gave some crude answers which were not very comfortable to use.
So I was astonished to see that I could download firefox 8.0 as tar.gz for linux, extract it to /opt/firefox and changing the link for "htmlview" gives me the newest version of firefox looking as it is fully integrated and working like charm.
This is just for the books and might look like an idiot's guide to centos-firefox, but what would we do, not being an idiot from time to time?

firefox 8.0 for centos 5
Welcome to the CentOS fora and thanks for the report. Perhaps someone will now supply a package for FF-8.
Edit: I see the Remi repo has a package.
Edit2: OOPS - no CentOS-5 package - forgot to check that. :-(

Re: firefox 8.0 for centos 5
In the past I have used the instructions here to run more recent versions of firefox.
http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/Firefox4onCentOS5
This has worked fine and basically involved a one time coming up with an unsupported copy of libstdc++.so.6 for local use by Firefox 4 and above.
What has changed with Firefox 8 is that they now include a usable copy of libstdc++.so.6 with the tarball, making it a standalone working build that only needs to be extracted for use.
Nice to see that a RPM is being made available now. I see one at REMI for CentOS 6, but not for CentOS 5. Maybe I missed it, maybe the one for CentOS 6 will work anyway?
Edit: The REMI package for CentOS 6 does not work on CentOS 5 (dependencies).
