yum can't update base/primary_db [Error 4] and [Error 256]

Hello everyone,

I have been having problems trying to get yum to operate correctly. This is on a new server that I am trying to build. I have tried install CentOS 5.5 from downloaded ios images and I have even tried installing 5.0 and then using yum to upgrade and it still gives me the same error..

At this point this is where I stand. I did a fresh install of CentOS 5.0 and then ran yum to upgrade to 5.5. yum was able to run and did a full upgrade of the server.

[root@web01 ~]# cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 5.5 (Final)

I have disabled SELinux just in case this was causing the problem.

[root@web01 ~]# sestatus
SELinux status: disabled

I have version 3.2.22 of yum installed on the server.

[root@web01 ~]# yum --version
3.2.22

I have tried cleaning yum sever times and I am still getting the same error every time that I try to use yum. I have search the forums but I am not able to find any solutions.

Looks like it either cannot resolve any hostnames (check /etc/resolv.conf) or your network is not working.

I do have the correct DNS entries in /etc/resolv.conf. I am looking at my router configuration to see if I am blocking it. The thinkg that I think is strange is that 816KB of the file gets downloaded before the time out.

Yes, I proxy server running. It is running in passive mode and does not require any configuration on the PC or server. I will get a look at the links that you have provided.

I will make sure that the firewall and proxy server are disabled on this subnet and re test.
