Apache 2 Test Page Powered by centos..what is it and how do i remove it?

Postby LordHowitHurtz » 2010/07/02 16:45:41

i have never heard of centos before....until yesterday.
i opened up my browser to surf the web and a page popped up i had never seen before.
Apache 2 Test page powered by centos.
Any address i put into my firefox browser won't come up and i'm stuck on this test page and
i can't locate it on my computer to remove it.

How do i get rid of it and more importantly how did it get on my computer in the first place?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

No, i'm not joking.
After reading thru that thread i see what it is and i can assure you i did not download it and install it.
i don't run a website so i would have no need to use it.
Like my first post stated i had not heard of apache 2 or centos until i opened up my browser yesterday and the test page appeared.
Should i contact my isp? Frankly i don't know what to do.

Lord...
well, it doesn't sound too earth shattering. I'm not up on these things to offer you a resolution straight up.
Users pschaff and a couple of others will do so, the moderators.
Just briefly describe your system;;

Are you in Windows, I guess not another linux if you haven't heard of centos before.
Do you have access to alternate browsers. e.g. internet explorer, opera, Is it a regular desktop home pc you are on....??

Apache2 is an open source web server. centos is a linux distro. Is there anything you've recently installed?

i'm using an older acer with win7 64bit, my primary computer, i'm typing this on an old laptop i keep for situations like this.
i've opened up ie and get the same test page, i don't have any other browser installed.
As for recent installs, they have been free/trials of dvd authoring and editing software.

well, as a former windows user, I would say, a couple of points. The installs of dvd software should not impact, by rights.
Being windows, have you made a system restore point recently?
I'd suggest uninstalling and re-installing firefox. Now uninstalling and re-installing ie is another matter.
That's a thing about windows; it's so integrated into the basic system. Though you should be able to.
Just be prepared to uninstall a few extras along the way and re-install.
See if you have apcahe 1 or 2 anywhere in your system.
Do you have links in bookmarks to try other than typing into the address bar.
Your issue I would say is apache, not cemtos.

Is there any type of internet address associated with the test page?
Generally an apache test page might come up for a web site that it incomplete or being maintained / upgraded.
All you need is a Windows user forum! The one that isn't.
Anyway, I would work towards uninstalling it out of your system; look at the windows net services, like ftp; they're all unistallable and re-installable.

No, i have not created a system restore point recently.
There is no results for centos when i search my programs and files and doing a search for apache i get a en-us.dic file that opens up in notepad and it looks like it might be close to 5000 characters, if not more and i don't think i should put it up here. i'm guessing it normally installs in the program files folder and i've searched thru most of the folders and didn't find any reference to apache or centos.

Yes, i've tried both typing in a website address into the locations bar and using my bookmarks. The address is in the location bar but it's always the test page that appears Another strange thing is that i cannot access my router set up utility.

Also i forgot about installing the new update to firefox the other day. DOH!

Ok, i've uninstalled firefox and after doing that realized i couldn't get to the website to download it, so i downloaded it to my laptop and put it on a disc and reinstalled and i still get the apache test page.

There is no webpage associated with the test page.

i'm going to look into uninstalling ie.

Yes, I think you should ask your ISP. From what you described, it seems only they can help you. It could be a login issue or a browser setup problem.

LordHowitHurtz,

first, I suppose you won't read this since you said you'll go away. On the chance you revisit and view, I appreciate your gracious thanks.
I can't help but think toracat's initial

Are you joking?

left you offside. However, for what it's worth, while I suggested to uninstall it out, toracat finally gave you a legitimate and informed piece of advice.
That is, his input was nice and supportive in its own right, built on the description I prompted you for.

I hope you have it sorted.
Seems it can be easy to appear cold while trying to help, for free.

toracat, I think this thread can be tied off.
