[RESOLVED] My CentOS 6 (new install) is NOT keeping my machine name.

Postby Goody1959 » 2012/04/03 03:07:49

Perhaps I have a deficiency. But, when I did my install of CentOS 6, I was asked to name the machine. I did so. The name is "grandpa01". I completed the install. Rebooted. Did the updates. And, my machine is still called localhost. Am I working with an incorrect assumption that the machine should carry the name that I gave it? Is my expectation unreasonable? This is the "main" of 2 machines on this home network. (soon to be 3). I thought that they should all have identifiers that are unique in the network. Can someone please give me some information that will help me understand the naming of machines on a home network?Despite the pages of things that I have read since my first attempt, I do not get it.

All boxes have the localhost name associated with 127.0.0.1 This is normal

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

Try
Code: Select all
cat /etc/sysconfig/network
Does the result show your desired hostame? If not then specify it there. You may also want to read TipsAndTricks/EmulateFixedAddressByDHCP and check out the DNS capabilities of your router.

If more help is needed then please provide more information about your system by running "./getinfo.sh network" and showing us the output file.

Nothing too odd there other than no lspci -nn output. How about /etc/sysconfig/network? Did you read the DHCP article?

First, thanks to those that offered assistance.

I think that the problem I had was that I only gave "grandpa01" as the name for the machine. There was no domain info( grandpa01.grandpa.net ) so I think the system defaulted to localhost.localdomain..

I went to the library this morning and took out "The Centos Bible". While it was written for 5.3 I think that I might find it a bit easier at first to work with a book to get some of the concepts and tool usage figured out. Once I have a better understanding of the system I (hopefully ) won't ask questions that could have been avoided. I will spend a couple of weeks working with the book, and, going wherever that leads me on the web. I hope it will help me target my issues better and save some bandwidth.
One again, thanks.

Having a domain part of the name may indeed help, but the hostname needs to be specified in the right place to "stick".

That's rather dated for CentOS-6 but probably OK for general concepts. For something closer to the mark that can be had for a song, an older Fedora book such as "Fedora Bible 2010 Edition: Featuring Fedora Linux 12" by Christopher Negus, Eric Foster-Johnson would be closer to the mark, as CentOS-6 is derived from Fedora 12/13, whereas CentOS-5 is most closely related to Fedora 6 - quite a lot different.

Once I have a better understanding of the system I (hopefully ) won't ask questions that could have been avoided. I will spend a couple of weeks working with the book, and, going wherever that leads me on the web. I hope it will help me target my issues better and save some bandwidth.

Good plan. :-)

Either will do, but I'd probably say [RESOLVED] which is a bit squishier.

Thank you for the information regarding the derivation of C06. I will go for the Fedora book.
