SIS191 on CentOS 5.2 not working.

Postby Kees » 2008/07/21 20:02:41

Hello All,

I recently installed CentOS 5.2 on an Acer Aspire M1610 Desktop.
The on-board NIC is a SIS191 and is not recognized by the system, or not working anyway.

I have googled the planet on this subject and have found solutions from buying another NIC to compiling a new kernel.

The output of lspci is (a.o.):
00.04.0 Ethernet Controller Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 191 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev.02)

At first I was over the moon: Yes, the card is recognized!
But how do I get this working?

On the SIS-site there is a so-called driver, but that refers to hacking the kernel.
For me at this stage a bridge too far :)

I am by no means a Linux expert (as you might have guessed) so I might overlook something very basic.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The CentOS kernel includes a driver (SiS190) that is supposed to support SiS190/191 network controllers, but it sounds like it's not working for you.

Can you post the output from 'lsmod'

See if the module 'sis190' is loaded. If not, try force loading it with:

modprobe sis190

then try bringing up the network.

However, I suspect that if it's not working out of the box then it may be easier for you to buy another NIC.

Thank for your quick response and sorry for not answering sooner.
I have bought a new NIC and I am up and running now.
$10 was not worth loosing any sleep.

Greetings,
