CentOS 4 ISO / download / CD burning problems

Postby osde-info » 2005/03/05 13:38:57

I couldn't believe the number to people on the mailing list week who were having problems with CentOS 4 ISO / download problems and having to pad zero's to fix the ISOs. Unfortunately it's all true !

I've now spent 8 hours re-downloading ISOs using BitTorrent and HTTP from UK, France, Germany and the Netherlands !

Some of these ISO's don't even download they just display inside the browser (FireFox) !

Admittedly I've been trying to download and burn using Windows.

Is there a new ISO format that only works on GNU/Linux that I don't know about ?

I now get errors from IsoBuster and Nero before I burn !

IsoBuster
"Out of Spec. Error : ISO9660 Error 4 : Do you want to risk it and proceed"

Nero
"Foreign image file : The entered block size does not correspond to the image length. THe block size may be wrong. Do you want to correct the value or ignore the problem?"

I had never ever even heard of these problems until last weeks mailing list and have never ever had this sort of problem with any other GNU/Linux or FreeBSD distro !

Can anyone help ?

... even more postings on the maillists ...

It seems to me that the Windows HTTP download DOES NOT WORK

Suggestions seem to include

1) Use BitTorrent instead of HTTP
2) Wait for all 4 ISO's to complete BitTorrenting before burning any of them
3) Double check MD5SUMs with ISOBuster before burning (Latest 4 have just passed but still fail media check)
4) Burn to CDRW instead of CDR to reduce toast created
5) Boot with linux ide=nodma
6) Always do a media test before installing

Success !
CD 2 now passes the media test but CD's 1,3,4 still fail so what use is that ?

I repeat I have never come across such widespread ISO download and CD burning problems with any other distro ever !

Is it possible the HTTP ISOs have been corrupted or are defective in some way ?

I used FTP to download Centos from Sunsite.org.uk and PoundHost Internet Services LLP. I downloaded all 4 ISOs for V3.4 at the same time with no problem at all. Then I tried downloading all 4 ISOs for v4.0 and got the same problem as a lot of you when burning to CD using Nero on Windows:

"Foreign image file: The entered block size does not correspond to the image length. The block size may be wrong. Do you want to correct the value or ignore the problem?"

CDs 1, 2 and 3 all failed with the above error. Only CD 4 was successful.

I then tried downloading the ISOs individually from the same mirrors - Sunsite.org.uk and PoundHost Internet Services LLP. This time success! No probs burning using Nero and I have just installed Centos 4 with no problems at all.

In summary - try downloading the ISOs individually instead of all at the same time. It worked for me! :-D

I downloaded via Linux in my laptop, the ftp version, I think I picked a German mirror, and md5sums were perfect, and a friend istalled it in an old machine, his only problems were with NIC and sound cards, but burn was perfect. I know folks
who have had problems in Windows with all ISO's attempted..

Make sure you don't have Boot on power set in your BIOS

You Know? When you plug you power cord in the pc boots up.

I always kick myself when i forget this.

Something about needing clean ram when you do a media check.

Also its a good idea to never install any OS with the boot on power turned on.

This is true with win2k3 server and raid.

let me know.

Jim

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I think my main problem was trying to use 10xCD/RW's in a an old CD drive that didn't recognise them.
