Problem with Centos 4.0 installation

Postby pmfwong » 2005/06/03 20:22:52

Hello everyone,

I am trying to install the Centos 4.0 i386 to my PC with dual boot. Originally my computer has win98, win2000, win2000 adv server and Linux 6.0 installed. I install the Centos from a set of 4 installation CD_ROM and it is verified OK.

During the installation, I choose automatic partitioning and leave the installation to remove all the old linux system and it should leave about 4.5G disk space spanning between 2 drives for my 1.6G installation requirement.

After I finished entering Package Group Selection, I hit "Next". The system seem to access the hard disk for 1 second -because the drive's light is flashing and then it stop and did not do anything else. I wait for about 15 minutes and still nothing happened. The screen and the keyboard is not hung and still functioning.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Your help is much appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,
Peter

Have you attempted this just once?

If so, try it again. I've had problems in the past with some machines where the installation process just hung at some point.

These were not CentOS installations, but they were various RedHat distros, so I imagine the problem might be the same.

Cormander,

Thanks for your response. Actually I had tried the installation for more than 5 times and it is the same. This morning, I configured the installation only to use one disk intead of two and it started the installation. It looked fine.

Thanks,
Peter

I am encountering this same problem, but I only have one hdd. It gets to 11% during the hdd format, and then hangs. Losing keyboard and mouse. I am trying to format a Maxtor 80GB 6B080P0 7200 RPM IDE hdd.

I have tried it many times with the same result. I tried with the text version, and the point at which it fails I get a lot of error garbage that scrolls by too fast to read.

Anyone else seeing a freeze or hang problem during the installation disk format? Any suggestions for workarounds?

Ok. The weird thing is that I used the install to manually delete all of the automatic partitioning that the install had done before, then I rebooted without continuing the install ...

Took all of the automatic values added a few packages to the Server install ... and it worked. No idea why.

I'm trying to tell myself that it wasn't because i kept clicking my left mouse button repeatedly at the point that it almost stopped at 11% ... computers just don't work like that, right?
