can't update from 4.4 to 4.8

Post by jomaweb » 2010/03/06 18:35:00

Hello everybody

No X started, I use the following commands to update to 4.8

yum -y update
yum -y upgrade
reboot

and all I got is a list of packets "set to be updated", but Centos is still in 4.4

If I start X, then clicking on the Red Balloon an assistant begins (update agent). Ask me for the root pass, notices me the channel

yum channel centos4-Base from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/os/i386/

and start updating. After a few moments i got this error:

URL: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/4/os/i386//headers/centos4-Base-obsoletes.1000
Status Code: 404
Error Message: Not Found

Internet connection is fine.

any help will be appreciated

Things do tend to get problematic with such a long time without an update. The missing file does not exist. Don't remember when mirrorlist came in, but you seem to be using an old repo config without it. I'd try this
yum clean all
yum update glibc\*
yum update centos-release yum\* rpm\* python\*
If that works, check /etc/yum.repos.d/ and make sure CentOS-Base.repo looks like
# CentOS-Base.repo
#
# This file uses a new mirrorlist system developed by Lance Davis for CentOS.
# The mirror system uses the connecting IP address of the client and the
# update status of each mirror to pick mirrors that are updated to and
# geographically close to the client. You should use this for CentOS updates
# unless you are manually picking other mirrors.
#
# If the mirrorlist= does not work for you, as a fall back you can try the
# remarked out baseurl= line instead.
#

[base]
name=CentOS-$releasever - Base
mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo=os
#baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/os/$basearch/

#baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/centosplus/$basearch/
gpgcheck=1

gpgkey=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/RPM-GPG-KEY-centos4

#contrib - packages by Centos Users
[contrib]
name=CentOS-$releasever - Contrib
mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo=contrib
#baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/$releasever/contrib/$basearch/
gpgcheck=1

gpgkey=http://mirror.centos.org/centos/RPM-GPG-KEY-centos4
There may be a CentOS-Base.repo.rpmnew or similar that has the correct version. If that works, then try
yum update kernel
yum update
